PEARL JAM- OF THE EARTH (NEW SONG OR IS IT?)

edited June 2010 in The Porch
I googled Of The Earth which was played in Dublin on June 22, 2010. What came up is an article from 2005 when PJ was about to tour and was making Self Titled album.

The link- http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1502710/20050520/pearl_jam.jhtml

Ament singled out two other tracks as his current favorites. "One is called 'Of The Earth,' that's a song Ed wrote that is kind of a cross between early Peter Gabriel/ Genesis and Sleater-Kinney with, like, the Who's Live at Leeds or something.

According to this interview/article, Of The Earth is an Avocado outtake.

"One is called 'Of the Earth,' that's a song Ed wrote that is kind of a cross between early Peter Gabriel/ Genesis and Sleater-Kinney with, like, the Who's Live at Leeds or something. There's also a song that Stone brought in that Ed wrote some great lyrics to [a song] called 'Parachutes.' That's probably one of my favorite pieces of music that Stone has written in a long time. It's got a beautiful melody."

The title sounded familiar to me too but I was just chalking it up to some residual thought from a future life or something..Thanks for clearing that up

    Anyone got a link yet?

Wow when was the last time the band played a song live that they hadn't yet released? Pretty sure it has been a very long time. I'm thinkin the 90's.

Did Ed say anything about the track before/after it was played? I can't wait to hear it and I guess this is making that new EP that's supposed to come out sound more real.

Before it was played, Eddie said that it was so new it was barely a song. That would suggest it has been reworked since it was recorded for Avocado.

It sounded great, Mike pit in sone great lead work. There were some interesting tempo changes. A few people have posted elsewhere that it sounded like In The Moonlight. I didn't hear that at all.

Overall, pretty great. Dublin has always had a treat or two!
When we found the things we loved,
They were crushed and dying in the dirt.
We tried to pick up the pieces,
And get away without getting hurt,
But they caught us at the state line,
And burned our cars in one last fight,
And left us running burned and blind,
    Chasing something in the night.

this song was also recorded during the backspacer sessions, and was released on VERY early album premier cd's sent to IMMEDIATE friends ONLY.

No, I don't have it. But I know of its existance.

  • Wasn't "The Fixer" from the Avocado era also?

I remember Mr. Ament talking maybe 5 years back how they should start doing a better job of carrying over material from era to era instead of not looking back and always starting fresh.

It's not just a Pearl Jam thing. "Tough," by U2 was "around for a long time," according to Mr. Bono, before it became "Sometimes You Can't Make it...", which is a terrific song, but didn't need that very first chorus.

Holy shit that was amazing! Finally they're pulling out some LONGER new jams. If they make a studio version of this, I hope they don't cut it short like many of the Backspacer songs seemed to be (even though I'm really loving Backspacer). The guitar work is balls out fantastic. Thanks for posting! I hope this means they're considering the release of something new later this year....

Posted this in the Given to Fly section, but I was saying how I was wondering when they'd break out a new jam session like Rearviewmirror..where the boys huddle up and let it rip. Looks like this could be the one and I really hope it is. Loved it. Kind of thought it had pieces of PJ through all the years. Heard a little bit of a Deep vibe in there I thinK!

Anyway..loved loved loved loved loved it! Lucky Dublin'ers!

No, none of those actually had any lyrics, other than Of The Earth (which only had Eddie's vocal of "of the earth" over and over, no other lyrics)...so combined with the story from avocado-era, it was wise to assume it was re-recorded/re-structured for backspacer, but never panned out.
