All y'all freaking out that this means in any way Jeff/RNDM is holding up PJ's recording, you're missing one obvious fact and one easy-to-miss-but-previously-reported fact.
Obvious: with Brad and Soundgarden touring, Ed having just finished his tour in early Dec, and who knows what other side/solo projects already in motion, RNDM recording another album in probably days cannot possibly be a factor in any delay in PJ finishing their album. There is simply a lot going on in PJ-member-land.
Easy to miss: Before RNDM even finished their club tour, they already had some 10 additional songs worked out before the end (probably recorded even more by the end). This was reported in someone's post-RNDM show post. This was probably recording songs already worked out, hence even SHORTER time in the studio to make this happen.
I'm thrilled at this news. I think RNDM rock, and I also believe that for a band that's been together for 20 yrs, we all benefit as fans if they stay "interesting" to themselves and to their bandmates, which means doing things on their own and then bringing back new/evolving perspectives to the PJ dynamic.
Geesh, haven't any of you ever dated? Sure the "I only want to be with you all the time, every minute of the day" stuff is nice for maybe the first couple of years (or first couple of weeks!), but for couples in it for the long haul, you've got to maintain your identity and keep up your interest in things even if your partner isn't interested (except, of course, interest in romance/sex with others, but that is another thread in another forum isn't it! )
But if you read interviews with bands around for a long time, over and over they liken their band relationship to a marriage (for better or worse). Be glad Jeff, Stone, Ed, Matt and Mike all keep their own things going and are increasingly exploring other projects. It probably makes PJs continue longevity much MORE likely, not less.
Do you really want one more album sooner, but then not much else for longer... or all sorts of good spin-off stuff and more albums and more live shows for the longer haul?
I like RNDM but I'd much rather have them focus on the new Pearl Jam album rather than more RNDM.
It is going to be a big disappointment if the new PJ album gets delayed because of RNDM. :x
It won't. Joseph Arthur once put out 4 albums in as many months. These guys will have no problem fitting this project in without getting in the way of a PJ album.

And he puts out double albums too...
He doesn't need four years plus to record, a weekend is enough...
Give a monkey a brain and he'll swear he's the center of the Universe...
