It’s been 25 years since Cameron Crowe’s grunge-era defining film Singles hit
theaters and introduced the masses to Matt Dillon’s innovative
smeared-soul patch goatee. But maybe even more influential than the
movie itself was the film’s soundtrack, featuring a wealth of Seattle’s
then-burgeoning-now-superstar talents from Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam to Soundgarden and Mother Love Bone.
A quarter century later and these influential songs are finally getting
the remaster treatment, sounding better than ever. This Saturday, June 24, you can hear them in their reissued glory at a special listening party at the Light in the Attic record shop located in KEXP’s Gathering Space at noon.
The reissue and anniversary come at a poignant time for the scene the film documented. In the wake of Soundgarden
lead vocalist Chris Cornell’s death, his contributions feel
particularly heartening. Cornell not only contributed tracks with the
band and made a cameo in the film, but he also contributed solo material
as well. The deluxe CD edition includes six of his solo tracks — one of
which being a score piece. The whole soundtrack is an enlightening
benchmark for Northwest music fans to reflect on, knowing the heights
that these bands would rise to over the next two decades.
There’s further incentive to attend as well, aside from hearing classic
Northwest and ’90s artists in high fidelity alongside fellow fans. If
you buy the soundtrack on CD or vinyl, you’ll receive 10% off your
purchase. Not just that, free snacks and soda will be provided. Come
celebrate this reissue and the music that helped define our region.
