I would always prefer to hear their own songs over covers.

I always prefer to hear them perform over not performing.

    In other words, no.

Op i agree with you, way too many covers. I've said it many times before, but i'd love to be at a show where nothing but pearl jam songs are played.

No. Masters of war and patriot was incredible last night!
  • Seemed like an excessive amount of covers but I thought they were pretty damn good. Baba doesn't really seem like a cover anymore...

I never thought so until after Fenway I when I realized they did 7 covers and scratched some originals that I would have preferred. 2-4 for them is standard and that's fine but I thought 7 was a lot.

I think we're getting all the covers because there hasn't been any new material since 2013. If and when they put out some new stuff I imagine the extra couple of covers will be squeezed out of the set lists.

I think so. Probably my only complaint about this band is the amount of covers they play. 1-2 is cool, but when you're a band with 120+ songs, i don't want 5-6 of the 30-34 songs to be covers. Just an opinion though. Some people love the covers and it's great for those who do.

Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. Covers have always been part of this band's show. We all know that. When the setlist changes every night sometimes you'll get a show with more covers than you'd like or expect.

The covers they play are so often played better than the originals imo. I love hearing their respectful yet creative spin on an already kick ass song. Masters of war is just immense and seems like it should never, ever be played by any other band again. It's like the song finally found its home on mikes guitar and in eds angry, heartfelt passion.

Masters of War - Wrigley 1. Listen to it. You'll want them to play more covers after that.
  • I love the covers. My only negative is that they walked out to Baba and then they played it. For some reason that seamed passé to me. Could be that I've heard it a little much lately.

Other than that we got some great covers last night!

Sometimes they play a couple too many. But, it doesn't really bother me. They obviously have fun doing them and they are very good at making them their own.

My wife and I had this last night after the show - I said they did/do play too many covers.
  • No complaints here. Symphonic baba was walk on music to every show in 2000 I think. So many of those covers are pearl jam standards now (mow, miracles, baba) it didn't even occur to me there were a lot of them. I loved hearing surrender.

I would prefer no covers. 7 covers last night. 0 from No Code. 0 from Riot Act. At least 1 song from each album should be played each show.
  • slightofjeffslightofjeff Posts: 7,762
I am a huge fan of a well-placed cover or two, but seven is a bit much. It's really the only thing I would tweak about last night. Still fun though. I sang the shit out of Masters and Surrender and Baba.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
  • I think 5-7 covers in a 3hr show is perfect. There are a few I'd like to see retired and a few that I'd like back in the rotation, but that's just personal preference.

I agree. Would love to see their own music more. They have so many great songs we rarely get to hear. That being said, they seem to enjoy playing covers, so whatever makes the boys happy:)
