Flying is not traveling to me... You leave point A and arrive in point B with just stale peanuts and stale air in between destinations... no culture, no landscape, nothing...
Driving on the other hand, now that is traveling my friends...
2500 miles for just 2 shows on this past Midwest tour... we were able to experience first hand Appalachia, the mid south, the Mississippi delta, and the midwest/great plains with all kinds of stops and adventures along the way... if I flew I would have seen 3 airports and cab rides/shuttles to and from the hotel
agree.
Drove 2600 miles last week. And loved every mile. Price gas went down too.
I drove from Indiana to Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton and back again for the 2011 tour by myself. While Saskatchewan may just be wheat fields it was still awesome to be in the middle nowhere. Very relaxing. As far away from a desk and computer as possible. Would go an hour without seeing another car sometimes.
Now, the last 10 hours of the drive back was painful.
We drove from St Paul to Milwaukee and from there it was a 16 hour drive to Denver. First drive was nice, second one not so much haha :P I was warned that driving through the Midwest wouldn't be much of an adventure and I'm afraid they were right!
id by driving you would not have had as much time to see chicago... so i was just asking what's wrong with seeing everything you flew over PLUS chicago, instead of just seeing chicago?
ain't nobody got time fo' dat! Seriously i think we only like 4 or 5 days including travel days + show day.
But honestly I never even knew anybody that went anywhere except when they had to see family until like two years ago. So I should really shut up on this topic.
I've traveled about 6500 miles roundtrip for PJ over the past year. Philly to Seattle and Philly to Moline
you drove from philly to seattle? you just might be my hero, we need to hang out!
Don't call me a hero yet. I flew from Philly to Seattle. I can't imagine driving coast to coast during winter. What would you do? Go out of the way down south to avoid the snow or try to drive through the snow?
Philly 10/21/13
Seattle 12/06/13
"No Code" 10/17/14

I would not drive coast to coast in the winter lol
This might be a really stupid question but I don't drive so cut me some slack. When you are driving long distances don't you have to get on the highway? What exactly is there to see on a highway? Besides roadkill, which makes me sad. I had to go on a long drive to Steel Stacks in Pennsylvania and everything was just completely desolate on the way there.
I don't think that is a bad question but. Take south Dakota for example. When driving across country one time we spent two packed days of seeing what an awesome state that is. Badlands. Mount Rushmore. Deadwood. All of the good people we met....and I never thought I would love south Dakota but I do. Were I flying across country I never would have experienced a small part of what that state has to offer. I have travelled all over the usa but have only seen a glimpse of Europe and central america.. Have never been to Australia or south america to name two other spots that pearl jam loves to play. Hats off to those who have logged massive miles to see the band. Travel however you can!!
Calculated that out and that's 4,859.5 miles over 11 shows. Glad you people don't think this statistic is crazy haha

I broke that virginity at Cincy. I was a poster virgin when I declared it, though. How quickly that ship sailed while in the merch line, though. ;-) Man/Sheep/Pig or the Czech Ronald is coming to live in the studio at sometime, I'm sure.
And Dave, you are a travel nerd and that picture of the trip had me laughing so hard. It's all good. We're all nerds in weird ways around here. Travel spreadsheets and all . . .
I did think it was 5400 miles and with Cincinnati not being factored into your mileage, it would be an additional 200-250 miles, right? I mean, you didn't drive it personally, but your butt was in a seat for the ride. That counts! Update that spreadsheet! :-)
