usually 45rpm records will sound better. personally I think the LP sounds like shit. it was mastered way too low. unfortunately I haven't had the chance to listen to the SEVENS version.

Maybe the full length is mastered just right - its just our ears have been conditioned to digital music for so long.
yes, lack of compression could be some of that, but I listen almost exclusively to vinyl and the Lightning Bolt record's volume is mastered way lower than most of my other records. And they are analog transfers as well.
and as for my comment above.. it really doesn't sound like shit. the more I have listened to it, the more I enjoy the vinyl. I did only have the CD till recently and it sounds horrible. my only issue with the LP version I guess is the low volume... and maybe a little more low end on some of the tracks.

I have an audiophile level setup. The majority of Sevens sounds quite better than the original and repressed copies of Lightning Bolt. Much livlier and clearer. They did a pretty good job.
just wanted to pass this on to further expound on my above post... for those that are interested...
"One reason for 45s to sound better is to do with wavelength on the LP. As the record goes under the stylus faster, the wavelength at high frequencies is longer than at 33rpm, so the pinch effect causing tracing distortion is reduced, so improving the sound. Also, vinyl roar, which is due to the granular nature of the medium and sets a limit to how quiet an LP can ever be, will be pushed up to a higher frequency and rolled-off more by the RIAA equalisation.
Finally, as Paul suggested, if playing time isn't so important, the groove spacing can be greater and more level cut, improving the S/N ratio further, but at the expense of headroom on the phono stage.
It's a very similar situation to tape on a Reel-Reel recorder, 38cm/s is better than 19cm/s
