with the band playing new material in less that 2 weeks, do you guys think they'll drop the single before conan or right after? Usually they drop the new singles before they play on national tv but then again they've never played on the late show before...your thoughts?

Pearl Jam isn't going to plan the release of anything around The Tonight Show appearance. At the same time, they're not going to bypass the chance to be the first musical guests of the new "Conan era" just because June 1st doesn't fit perfectly into their time frame. It wouldn't make any sense for them to hurriedly release a single, announce an album title, or set a release date just for the Conan appearance. I think the Pearl Jam way to do things is to let the songs and artwork naturally come together under no real time crunch. I think the Conan appearance is more about being part of a big TV event than anything. Yes, there is some marketing value... this will alert people to Pearl Jam being active in 2009, but it's not like the Letterman appearances where they've appeared solely to promote new material (every studio album since No Code in '96) at the time of its release. From the most recent updates, sounds like the album will be released AT LEAST 3 months after the Conan appearance. I'd love to see the album out before their August shows as long as it's not rushed, but that doesn't sound too promising at this point.

Some people are picturing Conan holding up the new album saying: "Ladies and Gentlemen, here's a song from their forthcoming album, (insert album title here) due out (insert date here)... Pearl Jam!!!". This would not be consistent with Pearl Jam's history. We usually get treated to a long period of teases... SONG TITLES, ALBUM TITLE, ALBUM COVER, ALBUM RELEASE DATE, FIRST SINGLE ON RADIO, etc. My prediction is that Conan says that PJ is there to perform new song(s) from their new album which is due out later this year. No album cover, no album title, no release date.

When I first read the headline, I thought Pearl Jam might be performing a classic song from their catalogue rather than a new one. I thought that would make more sense due to this being Conan's first "Tonight Show", and also due to June 1st being a little early to promote the new album. I guess they did perform "Not For You" on SNL a good 7+ months before Vitalogy was released, so it's not completely unprecedented. But my point is that SNL '94 wasn't a Vitalogy promotional appearance.

agreed, i am just happy we get to hear a couple of new songs, thats all it means to me. if we get a digital release the next day or a classic wait to a new album in 2 months it doesn't bother me any, people should just take this for what it is, a nice way to hear a new song or two

I think its fair to say, if we get an album release in August, that a single could drop as early as sometime in June.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, rap records are "dropped" and rock records are "released."

Single drops June 16 (on iTunes ala "WWS" in 2006). Album will be out on July 21. There's no way the band goes much longer than a month releasing the album after they've already promoted new songs from it. 2000 Letterman and 2006 SNL are good precedents.

It would great if they released a single right after the Conan show IMO.
