Wow, after all we've been through.

I can just hear Letterman ranting in his office right now. Wonder if Dave will tell Paul to quit playing music from those whacky kids from Seattle.

Uh, yeah, I doubt Dave is offended. This is big for Conan, this is big for Pearl Jam, but it does not mean the death of Letterman's show. And, I have to believe that PJ playing Letterman only for all these years was a band decision, that Letterman had nothing to do with, and he probably didn't spend much time thinking about. It was nice for Dave, it was nice for PJ, and it at least showed they knew like most intelligent people that Leno sucked. But this does not mean they won't play Dave in the fall when the album comes out or something. This is a special night for NBC, Conan, Pearl Jam etc. and hopefully Dave will be smart enough to run a re-run that night.
words seem so out of place.

i would think Letterman would be thrilled for Conan
having such magnificent musical guests on his debut, or at least i'd hope so.

Conan is now the competition for ratings. And there has always been competition over
    guests between opposing talk shows.

Is it a huge deal? Probably not. But you can bet there were some groans over the news
at the Ed Sullivan Theater, especially after they turned the place over to PJ for the
mini show for the last album.

The title of this thread should be 'I bet LENO is pissed.' Seventeen years on the air, Pearl Jam never played the Tonight Show. The first day he's not the host, PJ plays.

Many of us here think its a big deal because they think it will hurt Letterman's rating. Conan's rating were going to be better no matter what because its his premier show. The majority of the people that will be watching Conan probably could care less about Pearl Jam.

i think the only thing letterman is ill about is the fact that conan and letterman are now on at the same time so ratings wise for that night might be a little different but that is expected...i mean Conan's first show is certainly going to draw in more ratings than just a regular mid-season letterman show with or without PJ and sorry to say that if you include the PJ fans that wouldn't have seen the show until PJ was playing, it wouldn't add up that big of a difference rating wise

i'm not saying that there aren't a lot of PJ fans, there are a ton, but compared to the population of the US and other countries that can watch it, we are a very small demographic...

so in conclusion, the ratings would favor Conan anyways due to it being his premier on the tonight show as opposed to a regular mid-season episode of letterman and the PJ fan boost of ratings wouldn't be as significant as we all make it out to be

I don't think so. I wouldn't be surprised if Eddie phoned Dave at home and told him they had been invited to Conan's show and asked Dave about his thoughts. Dave probably told him to go for it. Pearl Jam have been loyal to Dave for years, not once doing the Tonight Show. A lot of bands do both shows. A lot of actors/actresses do both shows to promote their movies. And now, Pearl Jam might be doing both Letterman and Conan from now on! Look for Pearl Jam to do Letterman in the Fall!

How many appearances has Pearl Jam made on Letterman?
    "Hail, Hail"
    "Wishlist"
    "Grievance"
    "I am Mine"
    "Save You"
    "Life Wasted"
    "Masters of War"

Ok, so that's 7... plus the concert webcast, plus Eddie's appearance with Pete Townshend, plus Eddie's surprise appearance to sing a bit of "Black". My point is that, as far as the late night talk show circuit, Pearl Jam has been solely devoted to Letterman since 1996. Leno was/is a corporate fucking shill and won the Tonight Show gig over Letterman after Dave thought he was the successor for Johnny. I'm guessing that Dave is grateful to PJ for being loyal to him for the past 13 years. I'm also guessing that Dave is not upset with Pearl Jam for appearing on the debut of a new era for the Tonight Show, a slot that will surely gain them a shit ton of viewers. There's not a bad history between Conan and Dave like there was between Jay and Dave.
