Some good albums listed here - do remastered rereleases count?
Tom Waits' Mule Variations and Real Gone are 2 of the best albums from every year!
  • Options

    St. Vincent - Masseduction
Queens of the Stone Age - Villains
    Moonrise Nation - Glamour Child
Pearl Jam - Let's Play Two
The Staves & yMusic - The Way is Read
Dan Auerbach - Waiting on a Song

I’ve listened to a million others, but these are the standouts to me in no particular order.

I wanted to like Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile- Lotta Sea Lice. I love Courtney. Project got her doing something different, but Kurt just isn’t my jam. There’s a good live show of those songs on YT with Janet Fucking Weiss on drums. I prefer that.

I don’t know that I’ve heard 10 new albums in the past 3 years combined in order to make a list.

I know.  If it's not a band that's already established in my repertoire, I pretty much don't pay attention anymore.  I'm sure I'm missing some good music but, as I get older, the more I lack the desire to begin new muscial commitments.  90% of the artists being named in this thread, I've never even heard of nor am I sure how or why I should've heard of them.  And I find that a lot of the more mainstream & better known artists just don't do much for me these days.  I'm not saying I want everything to sound like the 90's, because that's certainly not the case... but I have become a bit stuck in my ways.

Having good local radio makes a huge difference. In Milwaukee, we’ve got 88.9 which is listener/donor supported. Tremendous diversity and a good mix of a few established hits (without constant repeats) and  new stuff / upcomers. That’s also the main place where I learn of new bands/artists in the MKE and Chicago area. I’m not at a point where I can go see bands on the weekends right now, so if I didn’t have that, I’d be lost. All other radio is pretty much pointless.

Yeah, local radio where I live sucks.  We have about 5 country stations, one dance/pop/top 40 station, and one rock station that is just NOW getting around to playing what I listened to when I was 15.  And the latter still plays all the same Journey/Boston/Zeppelin stuff they've been playing every hour 'round the clock since I was but a wee Dyer.

I like to take band suggestions from this forum, then check them out on YouTube. If I like them, then I'll get their album. Amazon usually makes some pretty good suggestions too.

Agreed..... that's some good advice, and always a good place to start.  Pearl Jam and their fans have turned me on to so much great music over the years, that I would never have discovered otherwise.  Most people on here are going to be massive PJ fans obviously..... so there is always a decent chance that if the band likes some particular artist/album, or fellow fans do, there is a decent chance that I will too.
