Available for the first time commercially in any format, “Ring Spiel” Tour ’95 is a thrilling audio document of ‘the man in the van with a bass in his hands’ trailblazing 1995 solo tour, recorded at the legendary Metro club in Chicago, featuring an all-star backing band.

In February 1995, Columbia Records released ball-hog or tugboat?, the first solo release by Mike Watt, the influential punk rock bassist/musician whose bands - Minutemen and Firehose - helped define the sound and direction of rock. Also known as ‘The Wrestling Album,’ ball-hog or tugboat? features the punk pioneer’s collaborations with artistic peers and descendants, such as Henry Rollins, Flea, Thurston Moore, J Mascis, Adam Horovitz, Mike Diamond, Frank Black, Dave Pirner, Evan Dando, Nels Cline, Pat Smear, Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder, among many other friends, ‘getting into the ring’ with Watt.

In March 1995, Columbia Records announced that Watt would be hitting the road for the first time as a solo artist. Members of opening bands Hovercraft and Foo Fighters - Vedder, Grohl, Smear and drummer William Goldsmith - joined headliner Watt on-stage as eager participants of the jaw-dropping back-up band heard on the “Ring Spiel” Tour ’95 album.

Watt’s relentlessly energetic set at The Metro on May 6, 1995 is an astonishing sonic time machine, catapulting the listener back to that historic gig, with Watt and his fired-up and raw back-up squad, the musical lineup constantly shifting between performances to accommodate the different feel and shape of each song.

“Ring Spiel” Tour ’95 is being released with the full authorization of all participating members, providing fans a fitting, thrilling testament of Watt’s enduring and continuing punk rock D.I.Y. musical imprint.

It's funny that the limit on the autographed CD copies at Newbury Comics are limited to 5 per customer, but over at BullMoose, regular unsigned versions of the CD are limited to only 1 per customer!

Newbury pretty puts everything @ 5 copies per customer. Even for the Pearl Jam Coke Bottle vinyl release. There was a huge backlash on it where they had to update / cancel orders to limit customers to 2 (or was it 3) on that release. For limited edition items it should be 1 per customer. Though other sites don't care. For limited edition posters over at Hero Complex Gallery the limit is 4 copies / design per customer.

So I gotta ask--is it "only" signed by Watt? It would have been so cool if they had "the band" sign them too and surprised everyone who bought it.

Got my orange vinyl yesterday but haven't opened it yet.

No the booklet is only signed by Watt.
I have an extra sealed copy of the CD if anyone overseas wasn't able to get it. Only asking what I paid ($15+shipping).

Package was waiting for me after my trip from Seattle. Damn the audio is fantastic! Wish Mike is able to release the others with Ed & Dave from his Ring Spiel '95 Tour on CD.

I paid $12 for the cd. The show is radical. I'm a big firehose/minutemen/solo watt fan - the sound is great, super tight set. I hope watt makes some good coin off of the release. Mike Azzerad's liner notes are wonderful, too

Those sets don't really change, Demetrius. I doubt watt would even release more if they did (maybe digital). 1 show is plenty, i.e. LO2L was perfect!
