Underrated Pearl Jam Moments (of shows you didn't attend!)

SVRDhand13SVRDhand13 NYC Posts: 25,872
Listening to Detroit 2014 earlier today and still can't get over that Release/Oceans intro and find it highly underrated (probably because of the full albums in Moline and Milwaukee). The concept of those two songs to open a show is pretty spectacular.

So, what's your pick for underrated PJ moments? (performances, albums, songs, side projects, tv spots, anything really...)

One rule- don't choose from a show you attended. You know we are all biased haha.

I was fortunate enough to be at this show with my girlfriend (now wife) and I can attest to the fact that this was an amazing experience to hear that run of songs in a row. I'm the Answer, with Simon Townshend, was a particular highlight.

Not to mention that Yellow Moon was played as a full moon was occurring.

As to the main question in this topic, one of the full album shows comes immediately to mind.

Why Go from Boston 2003 is an underrated moment/version of that song. One of the few times I've heard Why Go and thought "Oh, this version really rocks". Something about Jeffs bass on that one.

Help Help as a song is underrated as f u c k. But can't say if there is a live version that really is.

Maybe not under rated, but the moment I regret missing the most since my first show in 2010 was the moment in the moline bootleg when you realize what's happening hits you

The Boston shows in 2013. When they first pulled out the sit-down first encore, and gave a glimpse into what we could expect for the rest of the tour. I was setlist-relaying those threads, ah man the chills knowing that I had 5 shows coming up.

11/22/93 - Barton Coliseum: Little Rock, AR
    attendance: 16,000
    support act: Urge Overkill
set: Release, Rearviewmirror, Even Flow, Alive, Once, Why Go, Black, Jeremy, Garden, Deep, Go, Animal, Daughter, Glorified G, Leash, Porch, Indifference
notes: Originally this show was scheduled for Pine Bluff, Akansas. Above setlist is incomplete/incorrect order. Ed expounds, "Is Little Rock pretty? Is it fucked? Is it pretty fucked?" The crowd roars with approval. He is relatively non-chatty, staying near center stage most of the night. Ed passes his wine bottle to the audience and later walks to sidestage, climbs on top of a monitor, standing with his arms crossed, almost threatening to jump into the crowd. Toward the end of the show, Ed says, "This next song was written specifically for this show, and it's called 'Treat Me Like the Devil.'" (May have been an improv or an early version of 'Satan's Bed.') Later he says, "This next song is called 'Treat Me Like an Angel'" leading to 'Porch.' Mike reads the band names and sports team names off the various clothing items tossed onto the stage throughout the show. Eventually, PJ throws most of their own clothing back to the crowd, leaving the stage wearing only their shorts and shoes.

I've often wondered why there is not more information/pics/videos/audio out there about this Vs.-era show... The possible debut of "Satan's Bed"?! The guys stripping down (to some extent!)?! Seems like people should have some stories!

I thought of another one... this encore:

    Bee Girl
    Around The Bend

    Hard To Imagine
    Footsteps
    Jeremy
    Alone
    Down
    Unthought Known

    Anyone know where it's from?

    Mfc>Improv>Immortality

Possible my favorite live segment the band has ever done. The improv is haunting and the immortality gets really out there. Easily the most unique version of the song.

    St. Louis, Missouri 04-22-2003

Daughter- close to 10 minutes long with ed adding some harmonica. Very cool show overall with no covers. Present Tense opener for the first time I believe.

I'd agree with this. 2013 brought us a whole new unexpected show format. No openers, "double opener" with the addition of Pendulum in their arsenal , 3 even 4 slow ones to start the shows. Sit down encore, consistent 3 disc boots!! Wow. What a tour that was in hindsight.

Speaking in terms of post-1995, the performance of Deep AND Garden in the same show (Toronto 2, 2011) along with the previously mentioned Release and Oceans to open the Detroit 2014 show.

Oddly enough, these are two shows I could have attended but, regrettably, did not.

I think those MSG 2010 shows are underrated. Some of the only performances of Slow Lukin and with the Strings. EPIC. I love how slow lukin sounds. I was fortunate enough to hear slow lukin on the EV solo the next year, but I still regret missing those 2 MSG shows in 2010.
