As always, thanks for sharing this. Whenever I hear Breakerfall now I inevitably think about the story behind the photograph "The Most Beautiful Suicide" that was used for Backspacer's artwork. Anyone else think that?

You will. I'm hoping some of that Binaural love will be happening this September closer to home.

    Listening now....thanks D!

Never realized Jeff was listening to Los Lobos at the time which in part attracted him to Tchad's recording techniques. For those who haven't listened to Los Lobos's album 'Kiko'....do your ears a favor and buy a copy. Tchad Blake did not have any involvement w/ it that I know of, but, regardless, it's a phenomenal album.

I cannot wait for the Binaural deluxe box set... When it eventually gets done.
I hope they put the original Tchad Blake mixes of the rockier songs on there, would love to hear the difference.

During my MSc, in the frame of an A/V Post Production assignment, I selected to conduct research in binaural recording. Guess what music album I used as an example of being recorded with this technique. ;) Needless to say that, that assignment marked with a B (very good grade).

When the tracklisting for Binaural was first released in late March 2000, it was quite different from the final version. Some tracks that were originally on the album were dropped and not released until the 2003 rarities compilation, "Lost Dogs", and God's Dice was added to the final version. The original version is as follows:

    1. Breakerfall
    2. Insignificance
    3. Evacuation
    4. Letter To The Dead (later renamed to Sad)
    5. Rival
    6. Grievance
    7. Light Years
    8. Of the Girl
    9. Thin Air
    10. Nothing As It Seems
    11. Fatal
    12. Sleight Of Hand
    13. Soon Forget
    14. In The Moonlight
    15. Parting Ways
    16. Education

Three instrumentals featured on the "Touring Band 2000" DVD (Thunderclap, Foldback, and Harmony) come from the early Binaural sessions. Several songs were rejected from the album that eventually found their way on to the 2003 "Lost Dogs" collection of rarities. These include Hitchhiker and Sweet Lew. Strangest Tribe and Drifting were also recorded around the time of the album's recording sessions, and both songs were released on the band's 1999 fan club Christmas single as well as "Lost Dogs".

With this track listing and Gods Dice that would make 17 songs. With the three instrumentals and other recorded songs around that time like Drifting and Hitchhiker this could nearly have been a double album. Holy shit...how good would that have been!

I often think of riot act and binaural as both having the breadth and depth for a double album. If there was an opportunity for such an album either of these two albums were probably their best opportunities. I might put together a Binaural double album by creating a playlist through I tunes. Haven't watched it for a little while but I remember the three instrumentals on Touring Band being really really good.

That's what I've already done.:smile: Riot Act is my all-time favourite album, and I'd love to see a double album with all the material came out of its sessions released one day. Side A: The original songs remastered / Side B: Down, Undone, Other Side, 4/20/02, Severed Hand (demo) and Last Soldier.
