I'm sitting here in my local library listening to Vs. on my iPhone and Leash comes on and the opening lines:
Troubled souls unite, we got ourselves tonight..
i am fuel, you are friends, we got the means to make amends
i am lost, i'm no guide, but i'm by your side
i am right by your side...

Cause me to flashback to being a socially awkward middle schooler and the solace I found in those words. I didn't want a guide. Just a friend to stand with. Thank you Pearl Jam for staying true to Ed's lyrics for all these years. This is one of the biggest reasons they have been my favorite band since Vs. was released.
I’ve seen Pearl Jam 25 times, Eddie Vedder 9 times, and Brad once.

    I know it's about someone Ed knows but like other songs that take on multiple meanings - with this one too I think about getting away from people that try to tell how to think, what to do, right from wrong, etc etc in so many differ ways - get out of my fuckin face I'll find my own way.

    I also love - take my (fuckin/lucky hand), which takes me back to I am right by your side.

    Love this song.

    Leash still turns me into an angry 20 year old every time I hear it. Love that song. Only caught it once live, Hartford '08, and it was fucking awesome.

    At 15 when I first heard the song it meant a ton, and now at 22 means just as much. Different challenges, but just as confusing and difficult as a time. I listen to this song often. "We will find a way, we will find our place." That line seriously comforts me. Leash is a top 3 favorite PJ song!

    Very powerful lyrics indeed. I can still get into that song today, even though I'm in a different place than way back when. I still remember who I was and I still remember being lost . Hell, a lot of us are still trying to figure it out, in all stages of life. This song will always be meaningful to me

    Leash is that song that you turn to any time you feel like you are standing outside the circle. It is the anthem of the disenfranchised, for whatever reason you feel like you are. Plus it just fuckin rocks live :-D

    You never really had to begin with.


    Sometimes it's not the song that makes you emotional it's the people and things that come to your mind when you hear it.

    LOVE Leash. I can still remember where I was the first time I heard it- which was on the RADIO before VS came out. Our local alt station was playing all the tracks from the album ahead of the vs release, and a quick scan of the liner notes would give you no indication of the parade of f bombs to come. Classic moment. I'm sure that DJ was crapping himself when the chorus hit!
