A Message of Solidarity @ the US Shows

pjpjpaulpjpjpaul Posts: 1,655
Given Ed's recent peace speech and letter I think as fans we should support him (if you feel like it of course) and before every show in the US we all chant the following right when the band takes the stage-
"All we are saying is give peace a chance." (John Lennon)
I believe this would be a powerful statement that he and his fellow bandmates would appreciate. Let me know if your in...

That's a long chant to organize - but superb idea!
Oh please let it rain today.

Honestly, I hope by October this particular episode is forgotten. Don't get me wrong, I think a pro peace chant/demonstration is always a great and noble idea. I think the sentiment behind what he said should never be forgotten. I just don't want to keep rehashing the same arguments we've had for the last week at every show in the fall. I don't want a pro peace message to be co-opted by pro Israel or pro Palestinian or pro Russian or pro Ukrainian or pro any other faction. I just want to get back to the music.

That may bring some flames but so be it.

Hear you Jimmy and get what your saying. We have so much strife in this word including divisiveness in US and there are many in audience that are apathetic so it would be cool for this to happen. But then get back to rock.

I truly understand the desire to not participate and to jut enjoy the shows. I mean I really do. and I also truly understand feeling like you may not want to participate because of what it might cause other people to say or feel about it, but I personally feel like at least for myself, that we have a freedom of speech in America that is a beautiful freedom and I would like to use it express a collective longing for peace and non-violent resolutions to conflicts across the globe. If Eddie can stick to his word and not be deterred from his stance because of what a group of people might think of him just for what he believes in then I think if a group of the audience wants to show their appreciation for that dedication to peace then they should have a right to join him in a short and cheerful celebration of his view. Again if you don't want to, no one is making you, Just thought it would be a nice gesture of support for a worthy cause.

I mean I don't think singing/chanting the words "All we are saying is give peace a chance" for like a minute or two is going to cut into anyone's day that much... But if Im wrong, Im wrong...

No flames, just a disagreement. I don't see this particular episode ending by October, and because of that, I don't hope this particular episode is forgotten by October. As what most would call fairly left-wing, I would gladly do my part to demonstrate to the world that 20,000 people in one room agree that there is nothing more imperative than the attainment of global peace.

I understand what you're saying, but everyone chanting that line from the song would directly counteract any arguing that might ensue. I don't think that Eddie would be in favour of quelling a call for peace just because it might cause some controversy. Quite the opposite, actually! Shutting up because you are worried about people disagreeing is the kind of apathy that Eddie (and hopefully all of us) doesn't want.
OP, I think this is a great idea. :)

While not a bad thing....it is a rock concert. My motivations going in are to hear some awesome tunes....not personal agendas (of which peace of course should be a global agenda).

It just seems the board is getting littered with song requests for various personal reasons. I'm just thinking how about we all just get psyched for a good time at the shows coming up and not try to personalize them.

For example: One guy was trying to get pulled up on stage to play guitar with the band. I get that it would be cool for that person, but do the other 12,000 people that bought a ticket want to hear that person play versus Mike McCready? Quit trying to make the show about yourself.

Obviously the band is cool with all of the requests though so my opinion isn't worth anything.

Your opinion is worth as much as anyone else's. I value it and take it into consideration. And yes, it is a rock concert and yes we all would love to go and just "listen to the music" as the Doobie Brothers said so eloquently, but when a band like Pearl Jam who are so involved in making the world a better place by taking their own time, energy, and money to invest in positive projects that reflect their views of community and humanity, I just feel like I want to participate. And by no means is peace easily achieved, it takes hard work and determination, sacrifice, admission of guilt and wrongdoing, among many other things, but like I said before, I have no problem with people just going in to the show and having fun. Thats what I am going to do for 99.99999 percent of the show too... But I also plan on showing respect to Eddie and the band by supporting their stance on this particular issue. If there is a big problem with that, come see me, Im sure we can hug it out... Im not trying to "personalize" the show either... Im just supporting the band... If I wanted to personalize a show Id get my haircut on stage like that one guy last year... That was crazy/funny/awkward/kind of cool... But don't worry I have almost no hair so it wouldn't take long...

I think it would be pretty moving for something like this to happen at a show whether you're in favour or apathetic.

    Soap box time:

Instead of shouting out words at a concert as a sign of support for what Eddie was talking about, use those words as a call to action.

This is an election year in the US, and a mid-term election year for that. One that those who oppose war, mindless killing, bigotry, discrimination against women and immigrants can't be silent for. As with most mid-term elections in the US, a lot of people stay home, especially young people. This may be one election that our "apathy" could really come back and bite not only the people in the US, but those around the world, in the ass and find a whole lot of more war, and not less going on.

So instead of focusing your efforts on getting a group of people to yell out some words at a rock show, focus those efforts on getting people to vote is November; maybe even for those who at least are willing to try to have no more war and discrimination, and are willing to maybe give peace a chance instead of those who support the "masters of war." Be a voice against those who are trying to silent the voices of those who may be from a different background and those who want change and equality.

The timing for these types of actions fall perfectly with the fall tour. I think the band would appreciate it and view it as more of a sign of solidarity than some words from a song from the past. Make your actions for the future where "no more" means no more.

Soap box done, flame a way if you want, I'm back to bumping the MN thread. See y'all in St. Paul.

I understand wanting to help get people out to vote, but my opinion is that the system of government in the US is already so far gone that there is no fixing it. We need to start from scratch somehow to make real change and move forward, but I don't see that happening any time soon. I don't want to turn this simple peace effort into some big political debate. All I am going to do is what I said with the first post. If you want to do it, thats awesome... If not, thats cool too... We don't need to argue about it... People just want to turn things into something they're not sometimes, blow them out of proportion, twist them... Its a simple gesture of support for peace and the band, and yes omg its at a rock concert... Did you forget the 60's and all the rock concerts that had a message of peace attached to them? Im entitled to my opinion as you are yours, and again I appreciate the input and comments of everyone and I won't say I am right and you are wrong about anything, just that we have different views, and thats the way the world is built... Its full of people with different views and ideas about how to achieve similar goals, and accepting those differences instead of believing there is only one way to do things is the beginning of how we can make the world a better place to live.

Is that why Eddie sang John Lennon's Imagine yesterday in Portugal? Obviously," some words from a song from the past "has very important significance as far as Eddie's concerned.

i mean, if someone started singing it, i know i would join in. it might make me wanna cry though.
