Perfect PJ Bootleg Finder - Excel Sheet

edited November 2013 in The Porch
In the past I have read threads about people wanting to find a show with certain songs in it, so they can buy a bootleg that they will enjoy. Now you can find that perfect bootleg! :)

1Ar0vbI.jpg

As an example, I entered all of the songs from the first show I went to. 8-)

This Dropbox Download link will download an excel file I wrote. Enter the songs you want, wait for the calculation, and the sheet will tell you the bootleg that most closely matches your list!

TIPS: Make sure the excel sheet is on manual calculation! Enter all of the songs and then calculate. Leaving it on auto-calculate created problems for me! :!:

 WARNING: This excel file uses 'brute force' in the calculations. The calculations will take a long time. BE PATIENT! I am not taking any responsibility for you overloading your computer, etc, There is approx 48 x 17768 = ~852,000 calculations each time the sheet updates. It took my Macbook Pro about 20 minutes to run... :!: :!: :!:

Let me know what you think!

Good on you. I love that sort of thing too(ask my touring group for the fall tour, I've made a spreadsheet for all our plans for that)!! I've never had the issue you're aiming to help her(which bootleg to download) so I'm not going to go there & download it but just wanted to say WOW, YAY & good on you! 8-)

Thanks for the kind words everyone! :) I enjoyed making it. :ugeek:

Let me know if anyone has any good success. When I was playing around with it, I would always pick my favorite songs (that are rarely played) and obviously no concerts are gonna contain the most rare songs.. :fp:

I typed in all my songs, but then couldn't get it to "calculate". F9 did nothing and there is no "Calculate" option that I could fin under the Formulas tab. I have confirmed that it is in "manual" calculation mode too... Suggestions? Do I need to highlight a certain cell before calculating?

EDIT: Just realized it HAD started calculating . . . I thought I'd get a pop-up window or something, but I see the progress in the lower right hand corner.....

Yeah, I looked into getting a progress bar, but that was to much of a hassle. Like I said, it takes a very long time to calculate... Which is a major downside. :x But this was the easiest solution, which unfortunatley is 'brute force' and doesnt use search functions very well.

You can make this much more performant by using a pivottable. I've made a quick example and this way calculation is pretty much instant (http://www.sendspace.com/file/p9yfc1).

I put in my setlist and tried to calculate. Just curious, how will I know it's working and how do you confirm it is on manual calculation?

Right now it only contains the setlists for past shows. If you want to search for tour dates after the Wrigley date this year, you will have to update sheet 2 of the document and re-write some formulas.
I put in my setlist and tried to calculate. Just curious, how will I know it's working and how do you confirm it is on manual calculation?

Depending on what version of excel you have.. There will usually be a progress bar in the lower right corner. You can confirm its on manual calculation through 'preferences' tab on a Mac or through 'formula' tab on windows.
If you aren't sure, just save the document. The calculation must run everytime you save, so just wait for it to save and you are good.
