NEED HELP: NO CODE Media Books? (Pics Inside)

Need some help identifying two books i just got from a friend. They are clearly compiled starting at the tail end of 96 into early 97.

6609240887_8da30871ee.jpg

Each book is easily 500+ pages.

Book One is broken into two sections: Interviews and Album Reviews

6609243981_f165f46761.jpg

Book Two is broken into three sections: Live Reviews, Tour & Ticket Sales and Miscellaneous

From what i can gather, its essentially every single printed article taken from newspapers and magazines around the release and subsequent tour in support of No Code.

Each page is stamped with the source, date and circulation of the article.

6609289319_46c2c0de0c.jpg

Too much to go through at any one time but did find an early shout-out to the rumor pit from the Daily Record in New Jersey:

and a great contest for tickets to the Hartford show being run in the New Haven Register

Any info as to who made these or what exactly they are would be greatly appreciated.

Whoever put this together deserves a Pulitzer.

That's incredible! Did your friend tell you where they got them? I've certainly never seen them before. Enjoy! :)

I worked in a print shop and copy center years ago. We used to make these books for promoters and performers in Atlantic City. If there was a boxing match, we would make books with all the info related to the fight, if there was a show, we would make books that had all the info about the show. These books were made for the promoters or individuals involved with the event. These would be used to guage how future events were handled. I had to work with several people directly when designing, producing, and delivering these books; Donald Trump, Lenox Lewis, Evander Hollyfield, Don King, M.C. Hammer. (remember, this was years ago!) The binder that is on the book is a GBC vello binder, it is punched then put togeather with a plastic spine that is melted on. The covers are usually provided, and the "guts" are copies of all the available articles related to the subject, in this case NO CODE. I hope this helps you, you have something that was made for the band or for the record company. This is something rare and special, nice find, put it somewhere safe. Thanks for posting. :D

is there ANY sort of printer\publisher markings on this thing?
any reference to Sony\Epic, or a Sony\Epic label ANY where on the thing?

My only thought (outside it being an incredibly labored piece of "bootleg" fan-made paraphernalia) would be that this was some sort of promotional material for the band ...

i had a friend who worked in a major record retail establishment in the mid 90's and she used to see the most crazy Pearl Jam shit come from the Sony Representatives and her boss and such ... the only thing i remember specivically was a couple of leather Vitalogy portfolios\notebook holders, but i remember seeing and hearing about all kinds of weird Pearl Jam trinkets and baubles ... these books seem like one hell of an effort to go through to get a little "press", though.

    NICE THOUGH!

    no markings whatsoever.

its literally just massive books of copied articles.

most include the photos that accompany the articles as well.

im just surprised not at the ones taken from major publications with distribution to over 100,000, but these also include some publications that have only a circulation of 1,000.

the amount of work required (i would think) to put these together in the days before the internet was mainstream is monumental.

ill post more pics as i come across stuff....

but still, if anyone knows who actually made these, id love to know....

Those look to be pretty scarce and rare and maybe one of a kind. Hang on to them until you know more. Pretty cool though. Where did your friend find them?? Do you know??
Let's see those 2013 dates in the southern states.

Shot in the dark speculation here.....someone commented that this was before massive internet coverage of everything so perhaps these books were put together FOR THE BAND as sort of a single go to source of the coverage they were getting? Like I said, just a guess, but it would be pretty cool if you were holding, for example, Stone's personal copy.

Its probably something put together by a publicist or media company for the label or band to give them an idea of what is being written in different markets. If you look closely they all have the name of the paper, the town, whether its a daily or weekly, and the circulation stamped on it. As someone else said, this was probably how it was Done before google was the answer to everything.

    Pretty cool thing to have!

    wow those look great

    They sure are.

Back in Junior High & High School I used to cut out magazine articles of anything Pearl Jam and put them in photo book albums. Anything I could find @ my local library & newsstand. I have 5 full books fully stacked with wicked stuff from '91 - '96.

But this is all '96 No Code. 2 huge books worth.
Black & white in a custom made book.
