Led Zeppelin's Page, Aerosmith to play free China gig

BEIJING (AFP) – Legendary Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, Aerosmith, and the Black Eyed Peas will headline a free April concert on Beijing's Olympic Green, promoters said Wednesday.

The "Show of Peace," is scheduled for April 17 to mark Earth Day, which is celebrated each year to promote awareness of environmental issues, promoter Rick Garson said.

He called it the first-ever global peace and environment concert in China featuring world famous celebrities and musicians.

"Tickets are free. You can't charge for peace and green. It is going to be for everybody, it's like China's gift to the world and the people," Garson told reporters.

"What we are going to do is raise money, obviously, from sponsorship, international distribution, merchandising, Internet, ringtones, DVDs, CDs. That's how we are doing it, it is being self-funded as we speak."

Organisers were also talking with other artists about performing, such as Pearl Jam, Lady Gaga, Green Day, and 50 Cent, while numerous Chinese musicians were being brought in too, he said.

Organisers hope the concert will be beamed live around the world via television and the Internet to mark this year's 40th anniversary of Earth Day.

"My belief in music as a universal language is the reason I returned to Beijing to voice my support for the Show of Peace," said Page, who performed the Led Zeppelin classic "Whole Lotta Love" at the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics last year.

"This (concert) is a tribute to the power of music and its positive effect. Music has been one of the most powerful languages that speaks to the heart of the people around the world."

Sponsors include the Chinese People?s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the China-based non-profit Joint-US China Collaboration on Clean Energy, the United Nations? NGO Pathways to Peace, and Ted Turner's Captain Planet Foundation.

The Olympic Green is the park encompassing key venues built for the 2008 Olympics including the Bird's Nest Olympic stadium.

Discussions were under way on the numbers of concert-goers who will be allowed to attend, which organisers hoped would number up to 100,000, Garson said.

Cool. China usually doesn't get lots of major Western acts. I believe the Stones played there few years back. Also, Dylan's doing an Asian tour and Beijing is on the itinerary!

"Don't buy it from China, could be prison labor... Keep on rockin' in the free world".

If Ed sung "Don't buy from United States, could be prison labor" then I would agree with you.

    But he didn't.

Unfortunately the way to deal with China and the Chinese government isn't to ignore them and bury your head in the sand. China isn't going anywhere. it can only be a good thing if Pearl Jam play here. If they don't play here then nothing changes. Period.

Newsflash! Nothing will change after this concert either. People just wanna see the bands perform and thats it. Just like tibetan freedom concerts, live aid, farm aid and so on....

I don't subscribe to that negative attitude.

Even if just one person get's inspired by the concert then at least that's something.

I doubt that many Chinese are aware of the issues at stake re:the environment. I could be wrong, but I expect that the numbers of people here who are knowledgeable about environmental issues are far fewer than that in the West. So a concert like this can only be a good thing and may help generate some positive action further down the line.
And for all the ex-pats in China who like Pearl Jam there will be one more reason to attend.

I'm pretty excited about the prospect of them playing over here. It would certainly be great to get see them here. Also, I've not been to Beijing yet so it would give me another reason to head up there and check out the Great Wall e.t.c. If PJ play then I'll definitely go, and because the concert will be held on a Saturday, I'll have to miss work for the Saturday and Sunday - my busiest time in the week - but I have no work after Sunday until Wednesday evening, so I could spend a few days after the show doing some touristy things. All-in-all, I'd come out a winner. :)

Also, there's an airport just down the road from me that runs daily flights to Beijing so I could leave my apartment and be in Beijing within 3 hours. Sweet! :P

What's it like living in China so far? I read that the government blocks popular websites like youtube. Is there still tight control over the local media?

I love it here. I have a very easy life teaching English. Lots of free time which I use to read, watch movies, travel, and post here ;) And the Chinese are very friendly people. Youtube and Facebook are blocked but I get by that by using Tor.

If you go to the url in my sig then you can see my photo's of China.

Does that enable you use Youtube? We have friends in Turkey that can't get Youtube as it's blocked and it pisses them off.
