I was only thinking of UK singles. Billboard counts any old crap.
Well, I forgot I had the 5:15 single, on Polydor. It's still not a patch on another 1973 single, Relay/Waspman.

I'm actually the one that said that
But I just meant that it didn't produce any really popular singles, not that there weren't any released. Coming off "Who's Next", Quad didn't really have a hit single... although the album did very well... but I digressAll the rusted signs, we ignore throughout our lives, choosing the shiny ones instead...

But now I'm digressing too.
The important thing is that Quad is a brilliant album."The stars are all connected to the brain."0 -

Aint that the truth ? You all know it is.
This made me laugh, like we are all sheep that like whatever a lead singer of a certain band endorses. I guess The Who were never popular or held in high esteem until Eddie gushed praise on them.Nil Satis Nisi Optimum0 -
Slade is much better than The Who.

Like I said, they had some great songs, but overall.....not all they're cracked up to be.
I reckon....the one and only reason they get so many fuckin plaudits around here is because Eddie Vedder loves them so much.

I'll disagree... here's why.
I grew up in that period... late 60s/early 70s (1969-1973)... and there was a lot of great music back then. The Who contributed greatly to that period with 'Tommy', 'Who's Next' and 'Quadrophenia'. So did Zeppelin with 'I' through 'IV' and 'Houses Of The Holy'... Floyd with 'Meddle' and 'Dark Side of The Moon'. Think of different colors that make up a great painting... that's what it was like.
But, as a 'Rock Concert'... The Who was the greatest band I ever saw. Granted, i never saw the Stone in that period, so for me... it was hands down, The Who that was everything a rock concert should be.
Zeppelin had those really long guitar, drum and (ugh) bass solos and Floyd was a great theatrical show... but The Who was pure, basic rock.
I have yet to see a band that can hold a candle to the Who's live shows in that period.Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

Do you mean ignorant in the sense that I've never listened to any Who albums?
Because you'd be wrong.
Do you mean ignorant in that I don't realize that The Who MUST (in your opinion) be considered an album band because they did "rock operas" and "concept albums"?
I realize they did that. But, honestly, many of the songs on The Who Sell Out, Tommy, and Quadrophenia stink. They're only good at writing individual songs that are good, not whole albums. There's no Who album that I can say I love every song from it, the way I do about Vs., for example.
And I have nothing against a good concept album. Animals by Pink Floyd is an EXCELLENT album, one of my favorite albums ever.I pledge to you a government that will not only work well, but wisely, its ability to act tempered by prudence, and its willingness to do good, balanced by the knowledge that government is never more dangerous than when our desire to have it help us blinds us to its great power to harm us.

Meh, The Who are just alright for me. I tried getting into them a lot through different albums, but in the end, it was just a some songs that stuck out for me, not whole albums. They are a solid rock band though, but I prefer other bands from that era."Would I rather be feared or loved? Um... Easy, both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me." -Michael Scott0

I don't usually watch CSI but after hearing so many people talk about the episode that Roger was in I had to watch just so I could see him play a black woman! "The stars are all connected to the brain."0 -

the main dude in the who is pete. if you don't know pete's work then it's hard to give full credit to the who, especially without knowing what pete is really all about. the word genius, comes to my mind...

Well, good on you. They're lots of folks favourite band I'm sure, I was hinting that here (pj message pit) even though they get lots of plaudits, I wonder how many folks only know the covers that pj do?
Of course all the big Who fans are coming to defend themselves, why wouldn't you? Doesn't mean my point is wrong, or not valid.
What I am getting is that lots of you are in the US, maybe that's it, because here they aint all that big a deal really.I came, I saw, I concurred.....0 -

My dad loves em and he's English... so there!
Just kidding.
You're right. I mean it's not likely we're going to get miriads of casual Who fans come into the thread and prove you right (they'd be too embarrassed) or wrong (they wouldn't have the knowledge about The Who to do so).
The only long-time fans of The Who on the Pit, are probably on this thread. Even then they'd be a small minority.'We're learning songs for baby Jesus' birthday. His mum and dad were Merry and Joseph. He had a bed made of clay and the three kings bought him Gold, Frankenstein and Merv as presents.'
