Couldn't agree more. I can't stand David Usher. I was never a big fan of Moist, The Tea Part, Our Lady Peace, I Mother Earth, or any of those mid-90s alt rock bands. I dug OLP's first record, but they totally lost me with "Clumsy" and they've gotten progressively worse with each album. And I'll admit that the Tea Party were a very good live act (I saw them twice back in the day), but their albums were horrible and Jeff Martin's lyrics were cringe-inducingly bad. Those bands may have been the "popular" acts of the time, but they didn't hold a candle to some of their more lesser-known peers. I can think of at least a dozen other bands who were not only better, but who were also the REAL architects of the Canadian sound. It was these bands who paved the way for the current wave of brilliant rock n' roll coming out of this country. Long story short, there would be no Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, Sam Roberts, Metric, or New Pornographers without the amazing contributions of the following artists:

The Tragically Hip (the godfathers of the Canadian rock rennaissance, and they're still going strong. Intelligent rock n' roll for intelligent music fans. To this day they're still my all-time favorite band.)
    54-40
    Sloan
    Eric's Trip
Rheostatics (art-rock with a distinctly Canadian flavor featuring three of the greatest songwriters this country has ever produced.)
Blue Rodeo (invented "alt-country" long before Uncle Tupelo)
    Change of Heart/Ian Blurton
    Spirit of the West
Ron Sexsmith (I swear this guy writes melodies in his sleep.)
    Daniel Lanois
    Lowest of the Low
    The Inbreds
    The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir
    Cowboy Junkies
    Skydiggers
The Pursuit of Happiness (Moe Berg was my hero for a while)
    Weeping Tile
The Headstones (these guys rocked so hard they made bands like Guns N' Roses look like a bunch of sissies. their music made me want to drink a bottle of whiskey and beat the hell out of somebody.)
    13 Engines
    Thrush Hermit
    The Odds
    Mary Margaret O'Hara
Slow (heavy mid-80s rock band from Vancouver. Some folks argue that they invented "grunge" even before Green River or Soundgarden were around.)
The Watchmen (one of the best live shows I've ever seen. I must have saw them at least a dozen times between '93 and '98. Not only did Danny Greaves have great pipes, but the guy played a mean harmonica as well.)
    Crash Vegas
    Junkhouse/Tom Wilson
    Doughboys
Sarah McLachlan (her early stuff is brilliant)
The Mahones (Canadian style celtic-punk. I loved 'em!)
The Grapes of Wrath (intelligent, infectious pop-rock at it's finest. Anybody who says they didn't like these guys back in the day is lying.)

Anyways, getting back to the main topic: Like many of my fellow countrymen, I'm embarrased and ashamed that Nickelback is Canadian.

Great list, so many bands that I haven't even thought of in years, Love Weeping Tile and the Rheos. It goes without saying that the Hip are the kings, listening to thier new record and can't wait for teh shows next week in red deer and edmonton

It's not that I hate Nickelback, it's just that I don't think they are very good. I can stand listening to them. But, I wouldn't purchase their CD (other than Silver Side Up) that I got for Christmas a couple years back, which was by a fucking aunt that barely knows me.

That is a great way to describe this band, and from the couple of times I saw them, I would agree. They were frickin LOUD live !

  • I can't believe the Tea Party and Big Wreck\Thornley are on that list.....they are much better than the majority of stuff that gets played on the radio for sure.

RUSH?!?!?!?! They are the only act Canada has to be proud of!
  • Rush and Tragically Hip are the only 2 bands we can be proud of. The matthew good band and 54-40 were also good. Almost everything else we should all apologize for. Nickleback is not even the worst we have unleashed upon the world. We are lucky the US has not taken us to war for Celine Dion.

The only 2 bands?? You obviously don't know much about Canadian rock. The Hip are my favorite band of all time, but there's a LOT more to Canadian music than that. I'm continually amazed at how oblivious people are to the endless well of talent that comes out of this country. I'll state it once again for the record. Canada is currently producing the most original and exciting music on the planet:

    Arcade Fire
    The New Pornographers
    Broken Social Scene
    Sam Roberts Band
    Sarah Harmer
    Feist
    Metric
    The Weakerthans
    Matt Mays & El Torpedo
    The Constantines
    The Dears
    Kathleen Edwards
    K-OS
    Ron Sexsmith
    Joel Plaskett Emergency
    Cuff the Duke
    Sloan
    Rheostatics

...and that's just to name a few. Need more proof of our musical legacy? How about:

    Neil Young
    Joni Mitchell
    The Band
Gordon Lightfoot (one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time. His songs have been covered more times than Dylan, and Bob himself has covered a few of them as well. True story.)
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

AMAZING list....ALL bands/artists that Canada should be very proud of. I think I own/owned at least one CD/tape from every band on that list (except Slow) and many of those bands still rank amongst my favs.

Crash Vegas is one band I was always surprised never hit it big....man that girl could sing. "Smoke" is a classic.

I can't believe the posts claiming that Rush (or the Hip) are the only bands Canada has to be proud of......thats INSANE. I could (and have on several occasions) list 100+ bands that should inspire pride in all Canadian music fans. Canadian music rules, eh!!!!!

  • I feel the need to step in and defend/protest the inclusion of Big Wreck on that list of yours. While I do agree with the majority of it, Big Wreck were a fantastic group, and 'In Loving Memory of...' is one of those CDs that sounds just as good today as it did when I was 17 years old.

The Tea Party also, had 2 amazing records before going off the deep end. I saw them in a school gym when I was in the ninth grade, and it blew my mind, seeing as it was the first REAL concert I attended, so I guess I hold a soft-spot for them.

Finally, Our Lady Peace had an amazing debut, but I concede that they went on such a sharp downward spiral with everything that follows, that they ALMOST top Nickelback for biggest disgrace to the Canadian Music scene.

    That is all.
