And I love Gillian Welch, by the way! I've had Time (The Revelator) and Soul Journey for a year or two - they're both gorgeous. Revival is on my future downloads list. I'm glad to see she's available on e-music.
I was very suprised to see so much from her. I've only started using emusic, but disappointed with the overall lack of releases. And yes, they are both great albums. Been listening to them quite a bit. She (and David Rawlings) are a hell of a live act too. I've seen them once, would love to see them again."You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

I'm a bit jealous. I've just seen a couple recorded performances, but they seem to be a pretty fun duo considering the subject matter of the music.
I was actually thinking about going ahead and downloading Revival tonight (I've got a lot on my mind right now and music usually helps ease the tension) . . . but instead I went out and bought a Drive-By Truckers album. I see they're on e-music, but this is a case where I really want the artwork at hand.0 -
I think it have already been mentioned in here, but I just downloaded The Trials of Van Occupanther by Midlake last night. This is exactly the kind of music I've been in the mood for lately. Highly recommended.0

I like this album a lot also. It contains what may be my favorite track of 2007 in Roscoe however it contains the most annoying song of 2007 in Van Occupanther.soclose wrote:I think it have already been mentioned in here, but I just downloaded The Trials of Van Occupanther by Midlake last night. This CD encouraged me to dig up Rumors.0 -
I broke down and got Panda Bear - Person Pitch. I have been suckered into every Animal Collective since Here Comes the Indian and have been genuinely annoyed by how much I hate them.
I dont know why I keep doing this to myself.
Also downloaded:
Drive-by Truckers - Blessing and a Curse
Cold War Kids - Robbers & Cowards
I think I will try a Gillian Welch next.0 -
Awe, I like "Van Occupanther.":)
Last night I finally downloaded Califone's Heron King Blues. Not bad, though I think I still prefer Roots & Crowns and Quicksand/Cradlesnakes. Their such a cool band.
I then finished off my current downloads with The Decemberists' The Tain. It's an 18 minute EP contained in a single track. I've been meaning to check them out for a while, so it was nice getting a solid introduction using just one download. I love a good deal.0 -
I've finished up for the month, but added a few things to save for later:
Magnolia Electric Co. - Songs:Ohia <-- I've been meaning to check this one out for a long time, thanks Transplant for pointing out its on there.
Mercury Rev - All Is Dream
Black Heart Procession - Two
Black Heart Procession - Three
Black Keys - Rubber Factory
Black Keys - Thickfreakness
Sun Kil Moon - Tiny Cities
And if you like good long tracks, check out Earthless. They have a bunch of live tracks up from a local club (the Casbah), but since their shows are one long song, each album is one download, about 45 minutes of heavy guitar riffs.
This is the one that I've pulled down so far.

This is easily my favorite e-music download so far. Every song is beautiful.0 -
transplant wrote:FINALLY got around to this. I found the PERFECT mood for listening to classical music, this Vanska piece in particular.
stuck bumper to bumper traffic, snowing like crazy, streets are an ice rink, late as hell for work. I actually enjoyed myself.
I couldn't figure out why the music didn't hit me at first until I realized I told you that I had Beethoven's 9th when I had his 6th. yikes. Anyway, I did recognize pieces of this, I have found I don't care much for vocals, I can enjoy the chorus chants as I find that to be more of an instrument then an actual voice (did that make sense?).....need....more.... coffee.
Anyway, another great suggestion from you folks, so keep this one going.
Oh wow. I'd never have recommended this as your first Beethoven's 9th. One reason IS the vocals. The bass and baritone aren't nearly as good as on other recordings. In addition, the tempos and phrasing are pretty far out and way off the traditional interpretation. I don't think it's good to learn the piece from something this radical.
I love the 9th. I love the first, second and 4th movements. I'm not as keen on the 3rd and it's especially weak in the Vanska (to me) whereas the 1st and second are like... fucking rock music with the way the violins are used in this interpretation.
That probably makes no sense at all. LOL
Regarding the vocal style, it's an acquired taste. I grew up with opera so I think it's wonderful. I know a lot of people who hate it. I also know people who came to love it over time. I wouldn't give up on it. The pay off in learning to enjoy it is HUGE.

Also the prominace and style with which both bands utilize the drums.
Check these tracks by Minus the Bear: Absinthe party at the fly honey warehouse, Booyah Achieved, This ain't a surfin movie, & I'm not totally down with rob's alien
Maybe I am way off base--but that was the first thing that came to my mind when I was checking out Isis.
Really? I don't hear it. I hear more of a Steely Dan meets YES with 70s rock lead thrown in for good measure in Minus The Bear. I'll have to try these tracks. Maybe we're hearing the YES influence. I grew up with YES so I hear them as the root.
Hell, YES is even quoted by Tool. They've had a huge influence. Another favorite of mine is Genesis. I hear them a lot too.

Panda Bear - Person Pitch. This CD fucking sucks. Pretentious pap. Pure bullshit.transplant wrote:I broke down and got Panda Bear - Person Pitch. I have been suckered into every Animal Collective since Here Comes the Indian and have been genuinely annoyed by how much I hate them.

Drive-by Truckers - Blessing and a Curse
Cold War Kids - Robbers & Cowards
I think I will try a Gillian Welch next.
Drive-by Truckers - Blessing and a Curse. VERY disappointing. the Dirty South is 10,000x better than this. I won't say it is bad, just not nearly as good as I hoped.
Cold War Kids - Robbers & Cowards. Pretty good, not good enough to recommend.
Burial - Untrue. I have listened twice, I had to find out what the hell dubstep was. Not sure I am a fan. This is one where you need to be in the right mood. I have no idea how to really describe this.
I think I am just going to use up my downloads this month and grab more Mountain Goats.0 -
I finally made my first post-Christmas download:
Caitlin Cary and Thad Cockrell - Begonias
I'm just finishing up the second track, but it sounds great so far. I enjoy Caitlin's Whiskeytown work, but I didn't necessarily know if I'd be interested in her without Ryan. This is working for me. I have to say though, I'm afraid I'll forget I'm not listening to Whiskeytown at some point! Mr. Cockrell could almost pass for Ryan himself at times, and the music in in roughly the same vein. Very nice though0 -
Here is what I recently downloaded.
Korpiklaani - Tervaskanto. Finnish Folk Metal. Despite the 'genre', this is a whole lot of fun. Feel like drinking? put this on.
Clutch - Slow Road to China (Rare and Unreleased). It is Clutch, therefore it rules.
Mountain Goats - Full Force Galesburg. Another gem chock full of lyrical beauty.
Caspian - You are the Conductor. Post-rock. If you like post rock, you like Caspian.
I thought I would mention this CD, kinda flew under the radar but it contains a couple people you may have heard of......

this is old school punk with a light heart. don't look for any revelations here, just in your face, well, punk. If you didn't know any better, no way would you think this was Ryan Adams/Jesse Malin. If you only know their solo work, you may hate this with a passion.0 -
In an effort to get out of my alt-country rut I've downloaded You Forgot It In People by Broken Social Scene. I've been meaning to check them out for a while. I've also been staring at Metric under the "Coming Soon" section for at least a month now. I how they show up eventually!
And my previous purchase was Gillian Welch's Revival. I feel like I've been mentioning her in every thread I post in lately, so I'll just shut up her for now.0 -
All I can say is OKKERVIL RIVER! There whole catalogue is bad ass.
Recent downloads besides everything Okkervil River:
This Will Destroy You: downloaded a couple songs from S/T and Young Mountain. In the vain of Mogwai, hints of Sigur Ros.
Liam O Maonlai: Rian has a few interesting celtic tunes
The Ladybug Transistor: tracks; 3 = Wild and A Burial At Sea. Kinda has a Morrisey vibe.
Jon Rauhouse: a few tracks from Steel Guitar Heart Attack and Steel Guitar Rodeo. East Of The Sun is a great track with Neko Case,
Midlake: Oak & Julian - EP
Liam Finn: I'll Be Lightning has many great songs.
The Fiery Furnaces: just a few songs from their vast catalogue--Birdy Brain, Here Comes The Summer, Navy Nurse.
Cat Power: got a few from her new album Jukebox.0 -

I agree with all this. Didn't care for Burial or Panda Bear.soclose wrote:I finally made my first post-Christmas download:

Agreed on the Mountain Goats. Caspian is pretty good, thanks.0 -
if they still have it up, go out to their website and they have a free dowload mix CD called Golden Opportunities. Definitely worth grabbing.otis mcfluster wrote:All I can say is OKKERVIL RIVER! There whole catalogue is bad ass.0 -

Thanks! I heard a little Jon Rauhouse and I think I liked it.
I finished off my current download cycle yesterday. First I got Idols of Exile by Jason Collett. It's okay, but I'm not sure this one's going to get a ton of plays.
I then used up my remaining four downloads on some songs for The Slaughter Rule Soundtrack:
Jay Farrar - Gather
Freakwater - When I Stop Dreaming
Neko Case and Her Boyfriends - Porchlight
Uncle Tupelo - Blue Eyes
Much more my style. I plan on eventually picking up the entire album. I just can't see spending a large portion of my downloads at once on all the short instrumentals (even if they're played by one of my very favorite musicians). I'll save those for last. Anything related to Jay Farrar comes highly recommended, by the way.:)0 -
Two Gallants - The Throes Remastered. Good album but their most recent album is better, not available on eMusic.

Ida - Lovers Prayers. Best random discovery of the year so far for me.

The Morning Benders - Boarded Doors. A little Strokes-esque
http://www.emusic.com/album/The-Morning-Benders-boarded-doors-MP3-Download/11008332.html
Blitzen Trapper: They have a pretty extensive catologue, just grab the songs that you really like. I love these guys.
http://www.emusic.com/artist/Blitzen-Trapper-MP3-Download/11586828.html
Vampire Weekend - Mansard Roof: not the full LP but a couple great songs.
http://www.emusic.com/album/Vampire-Weekend-Mansard-Roof-MP3-Download/11101835.html
The Whitsundays: I grabbed two songs; Falling Over and It must be me.
http://www.emusic.com/album/The-Whitsundays-The-Whitsundays-MP3-Download/11135094.html
Basia Bulat: Two songs from he as well; In The Night and I Was A Daughter. I ran out of downloads for the month, so as soon as they refresh I'll be back to download more from her. I really like her voice.

Really Excited about Jason Collett's new album. Again, just waiting for the next cycle of downloads then I will download that. They had a pretty funny video with him over at stereogum.
