I listened to it probably 5 times straight over the weekend. Well, it is great. I wish I could talk intelligently about Classical music, but like Jazz, it is either (love it, or leave it). Not sure how to go about changing that as it has always bugged me. This may sound odd, however have you downloaded a classical piece that just flat out sucks? I would almost like to have something to compare to. I mean, can you really fuck up Mozart?

Your link for the Vanska worked, weird that I couldn't find it. I ran out of downloads this month however it is first on the list to go grab once the 13th hits.

In the meantime, it is all about Opeth - The Roundhouse Tapes.

Yes. I haven't downloaded anything that sucked because I'm more cautious now AND I'm more prepared. With the internet you can be "prepared" for a radical interpretation like Vanska's rather than surprised. You used to have to buy a very expensive publication to find out what was good (I can't rmember the title -ugh) and I couldn't afford it so I've had records that sucked.

Sucking is different with classical. For this music it's about whether or not you can buy into the interpretation or enjoy it. Sometimes you can't buy in. The interpretation does fit the piece to you. Sometimes it's is uninspired and in the world of classical music, that means it sucks.

But those don't suck. I wish I could find the perfect Jupiter though. This one doesn't have the level intensity throughout that you hear in their interpretation of the 40th (to me). However, they DO perform the final movement brilliantly and with fire. They bring out the miracle of the fugue at the end. It feels like the climax it is. It's wonderful

Sometimes this isn't handled well. It's stilted or... pompous? No, overly majestic! Like, it's the JUPITER so play it like a slow moving GIANT OF MAJESTY instead of the dynamic masterpiece that it is. Yes, the Jupiter can suck and you can fuck up Mozart.

I thought it was cute. It's one of their best sellers so it's on the first page of the classical music chart. : )

I just started a new thread about this, but I thought I'd say something here as well:

Anyone have suggestions for a Townes Van Zandt album? I have no idea where to start!

And I want to second Alessiana's Califone suggestion. They're one of my favorite discoveries of the last year. Glad to see they're on e-music - I only have Roots & Crowns and Quicksand/Cradlesnakes on CD. Heron King Blues is on my to-download list.

unfortunately they are no longer on there. I think they were there for a grand total of 3 weeks. Too bad, I LOVE that Hydra Head label. Good news on them if ya like iTunes is that their CD's are usually under 7.00 as they don't have an abundance of songs on each disc. Or just see them live and pick up everything there :) so in the meantime, everybody should grab all the ISIS discs.

Soclose, thanks for the Townes Van Zant thought, I was just going to grab the Live at McCabes as a starting point. I did grab a long time ago the Townes Van Zant/Steve Earle/Guy Clark live disc which is a great listen. It doesn't get too much better than Pancho and Lefty.

Otis, cool you gave Opeth a listen. I don't know what you listened too however if you are not a metal head, I wouldn't bother...but if you can, listen to a whole song (if you didn't already) as the tempo, vocals change at the drop of a hat. the vocalist is AMAZING. Their CD Damnation is a complete 180 from their usual material (not metal at all). This is one of my favorite bands.

I am going to check out the Bishop Allen.

Alessiana, perhaps I should check out that front page of the classical section :)

Screw iTunes. Amazon has them at 256 kbps. I go there first now if they aren't on emusic.

Here's Pelican's latest for anyone who is interested.

    http://www.amazon.com/City-Of-Echoes/dp/B000X6XHUQ/ref=sr_f3_3/103-0641114-7230231?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1194203833&sr=103-3

Amazon has the others too. I am trying the environmentally positive no cd method these days except for particular bands where I want both.

I wonder who that might me. Hmmmm

ps which Jesu should I get?

The environmental issue is a good point!

I've always loved artwork, but thought switching to mostly digital music would be a plus in order to save physical space. I like the idea of just buying physical copies of new releases from favorite bands or perhaps used copies for other favorites/harder to find music. I think I'm fully convinced now. Save money, save space and save the environment in one easy step. Not bad.

City of Echoes is awesome. I saw them earlier this year (as well as Jesu and Isis) and they just nailed Bliss in Concrete. I have been on this post rock craze for the greater part of the year.

I've never checked out Amazon, perhaps I should. I have been skipping for the most part physical CD's due to lack of space. In fact most of them are still boxed up from when I moved over a year ago. I have gotten by with eMusic just fine plus a random iTunes purchase. Plus the iPod changed my way of thinking.

As far as Jesu goes, get Silver. It is an EP but it is REAL good. Their new EP Lifeline is great as well. they removed Jesu from eMusic before I could get Conquistador. Annoying.

I kept searching for them off and on for months. I must have missed them. I'll get Silver from Amazon.

I got an iPod a few months ago and it's changed me too. I can hook it directly to my car stereo (bought that too) and my entire life has changed. My car used to be flooded with CDs and I had 2 visors with double flaps full of music and a 6 cd changer. I can't say finding music is enjoyable on the car stereo. Now that I have one, I know what to look for in my next one but playlists can do the trick.

We tried re-doing the house last year. Tried being the operative word. I had to box up thousands of CDs. Now I don't know where anything is. CDs are still in boxes. It's such a tremendous waste of ... I think about it now and see all the plastic and paper and energy wasted. I can't reasonably support it and think I'm doing a good thing with this voracious music habit. I've been part of the problem.

LPs are like books... or more. They are works of art and they sound great. CDs can be lovely designs and I don't want to give them up for some bands, but decent quality downloads will do me for now.

    I just need more GB. : )

Do it. It's higher quality for the same price and DRM free. I don't do anything with my downloads but it's a matter of principle.

yeah, I had to get a new car stereo hookup w/ the iPod resting in the glove box deal. I didn't want to deal with hooking it up through the cig lighter, FM transmitter etc... Controlling it on the stereo head unit is sometimes annoying but it beats like ya said, having CD's all over the place. I got mine about 2 months before they came out with the 160 GB and I was pissed. what can you do.

Let me know what you think of Isis

Sounds like we did the same thing!!! : ) I'm not sure how much difference the additional 80 gig would make considering the shocking size of my library once I get everything transferred. 160 won't be enough so it hardly matters.

I haven't had a chance to listen to Isis yet. I've been really busy but i will transfer to iPod tonight and fall asleep the way god clearly intended, sleeping with my iPod and ear buds. If this continues I'm going to buy myself top of the line ear buds. i have very good ones from Bose but I'm thinking something even better for christmas.

good girls get bonuses at christmas. I've been good all year. i hope someone noticed.

They might be the best post rock band I've heard. I need to play them more but Absence of Truth was phenomenal. Needless to say, I didn't sleep.
