Trans is obviously terrible. But it's Neil Young... so maybe it's actually a work of genius and our mere mortal brains are too inferior to appreciate it. This might be why mind-altering substances are required before we can even begin to approach it.

Whereas albums like On The Beach or Everybody Knows This is Nowhere... Neil reigned it in and held back just enough so that we could actually appreciate them.

    question:
why isn't anything from TRANS on Young Neil's best of?

    discuss.

so do you guys actually like Neil's good records, too?

I'm really surprised at the praise for Trans. I'm a huge Neil fan and I just can't get into it.

  • knowing the backstory of how it's about ben adds a lot to the experience.

    Yeah, it's a strange thing.
It was good to see Neil incorporating him into the Greendale tour.

truly- it makes it really poignant and paradoxical, like what if technology is our savior as well as our demise? the fact that he used a vocoder to connect with his son is pretty cool. he's a great man.

Same reason nothing from Mirrorball, Ragged Glory, ZUMA(!) is on the Greatest Hits album. Didn't chart high enough. Great albums all (inlcuding TRANS). Then again, I love Re*Act*Or too, so maybe I'm in the minority.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

What would have been more disappointing... the fact NY & CH surprised me with the full Greendale show in '03 or if they had come out and done TRANS in its entirety?

I think I would have rather seen TRANS. Especially if it featured a stage show.

Actually, the "cool" thing to say is that you don't like Radiohead. So suck on that. ;)

Wow, what at trippy thread!   I don't recognize any of these names.  Are any of these folks still here?

Anyway I felt like listening to something this evening that I hadn't heard in a while, something a little unusual but not too head tripping that would take my mind off matters for a while.

TRANS!  Why not?  It's not my favorite Neil but it holds a special place in his catalogue for me and I've got a lot of respect for the album- what he did and why he did it.  So I did a search here for "Neil Young, Trans" and it took me here.

As I listened to TRANS this evening, I spent a lot of time looking at the LP cover and insert art.  I love the way those illustrations mirror the old and the new, the earthy and the electronic, the human and the non-human- literally mirrored on the inner sleeve where we see the reflection of Neil with his old Gretsch White Falcon (that he's had since his early days) in the polished steel of a metal guitar lying face down on the road (I would love to know about that metal guitar if anyone knows more).

It was just the record to...

    ...excuse me... sample and hold...
"It's a sad and beautiful world"
