I was pretty happy that eMusic picked up Southern Lord. I will have a small field day with this one. I picked up:

Boris - Pink. I was waiting VERY patiently for eMusic to get this.
Om - Conference of the Birds. This I believe is Sleep minus Pike. I love full albums that have only 2 songs on them.
Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lions Skull. Really looking forward to hearing this. I have to work on getting in the proper mood.

    others...
Crooked Fingers - s/t. I now have all of theirs. Happy about it. Freaking love Eric Bachmann.
Yann Tiersen & Shannon Wright - this was a total shot in the dark. An artist I have become fascinated with (Neige) raves about this so I thought I would give it a shot.

And..soclose...have you ever listened to Brenden McKinney & the 99 Brown Dogs? I have a buddy who loves it. He is also really into the Alt-Country thing. I'll probably pick one up however just curious if you had a take on it.

I've never heard of them. The samples for the album available on e-music sound pretty good to me - it's going on my Save for Later list. Thanks for bringing them up!

what the hell, keep this one going :)

    Some Metal I picked up

Krallice - s/t. This cd rules.
Immortal - Pure Holocaust. old school. not bad.
Immortal - At The The Heart of Winter. This is an excellent disc. More variations than Pure Holocaust.
Ulver - The Mardrigal of Night. straight up BM however after a few listens, there is quite a bit more to this than I originally thought. Like it, not love it.
Cult of Luna - Salvation. Haven't listened yet.

    others:

Conor Oberst - haven't given this a shot yet.
Red House Painters - Ocean Beach
Red House Painters - Down Colorful Hill

now, after listening to Sun Kil Moon's Salvador Sanchez about 3,233 times over the weekend, I find it rather criminal I haven't dove into Red House Painters outside of the one release I have. Ocean Beach is a thing of beauty.

So I feel the need to mention that if anyone happens to read this thread, consider checking out Ghosts of the Great Highway. I purchased this years back for the simple reason there is a song called Glenn Tipton on there, however damn, this is a GREAT Cd that anyone should like. Like I said earlier, Salvador Sanchez...I could listen to that guitar loop over and over and over and over again til I'm dead.

Oh my god, Salvador Sanchez is my favourite song in the world right now. NOTHING, and I mean nothing has captivated me like that riff and those lyrics so much for ages. It's just SO beautiful, on a colossal scale. How does Kozelek make dead boxers sound so poetic? I must have listened to that song 200 times in the last 2 months. Ghosts of the Great Highway is amazing. Glenn Tipton, Carry Me Ohio, Gentle Moon, Pancho Villa (obviously) are all amazing.

As for Red House Painters, Down Colorful Hill is brilliant. I love the title track.

Seriously, anyone who hasn't heard Salvador Sanchez by Sun Kil Moon, do it now.

"Eyes of Los Rios cry for sons
lost on distant shores, unforeseen horrors
    struck and delivered him"
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

I think Sun Kil Moon and Redhouse Painters are a couple acts I'm supposed to like but haven't felt the urge to actually check out. I didn't realize they were on emusic, so maybe now I'll give them some more thought.

I've been going through my downloads so quickly the last couple months I can hardly remember what I've downloaded! I've got tons of stuff I've only listened to once or twice. I'll just list some of the better stuff I can think of at the moment:

    Dr. Dog - Fate
The Avett Brothers - Second Gleam
Centro-Matic/South San Gabriel - Dual Hawks
    Black Keys - Chulahoma
    Califone - Roomsound
    Great Lake Swimmers - Ongiara
Magnolia Electric Co. - Fading Trails
Yo La Tengo - Painful and Electr-o-pura
Oscar Peterson - Jazz In Paris: Vol. 1

Also, I don't know if it's still available, but Richard Swift has a free EP called Ground Trouble Jaw. It's . . . interesting.

Okay, I've had the song a few days now and I have to say it's quite good.

I plan on getting the remainder of the album sooner or later, but it bums me out that one of the tracks is unavailable. Will have to get that one from amazon.com.

I've been slack on posting my emusic choices here, but this month I picked up:

    Grand Ole Party - Humanimals.
Darker than Blue - Soul from Jamdown 1973-80
    Sun Recordings - Howlin' Wolf

Got a few more left, but these should keep me busy for a few days. If you've got an extra download left, grab Look Out Young Son by Grand Ole Party. Good stuff.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

  • not sure if this was mentioned already, but be sure and check out The Black Keys' "thickfreakness."
The album name and album cover are worth it alone!!!

I've got that one and I have to say I don't find it all that impressive (at least so far, not having listened to it all that many times).

    I really love Chulahoma though.

    good album.

Any day my downloads will refresh. I am thinking of trying an entirerly new genre of music although there are a few Burzum albums I need to check out.

soclose, glad you like the Salvador Sanchez! So incredibly annoying about that one track. I forgot all about it until you mentioned it. I have a free Pepsi/mp3/Amazon card that I may use for that.

That's exactly what I'm planning on doing. My mom is a Pepsi drinker so I get her to save the points for me. One more case of Pepsi and I'll be all set to download.

On a related note, I was browsing at Best Buy this evening and decided to go ahead and buy April by Sun Kil Moon. That should tide me over for now.

tried that last night...good idea but of course there are only select songs you can grab. oh well.

What I have grabbed recently, in order of user friendliness

Kaki King - ...Until We Felt Red. She has a beautiful voice and her acoustic playing is out of this world. I will be checking her out this Friday as she is opening for The Mountain Goats. Should be an unbelieveable evening.

Conor Oberst - this is 'best of 2008' worthy. what a fine listen this is. it is basically a more user friendly Bright Eyes. I guess that is why he recorded this under his real name? (side note, i find it incredibly annoying when artists to this). Anyway, for anyone who loves a good road trip, check out Moab.

Mogwai - Batcat. Well because I grab everything they do...
Dead Confederate - Wrecking Ball. This is good rock and roll. I don't feel like attaching anything else onto that.
Dead Meadow - Feathers. I don't like it as much as their later release but it is quite good.
Jay Reatard - Blood Visions. This is good old fashioned punk. Catchy as hell. it will force you to drag out your old Black Flag discs.
Russian Circles - Station. I was hoping to get more out of this than I did. Post Rock/Metal. I mean it is a fine listen however just expected more
    Torche - In Return
Torche - s/t. Haven't given either of these a serious shot yet.
Swans - White Light From the Mouth... Glad I finally got a hold of this. I am not recommending it to anybody unless you really want to dive into obscurity here.
Summoning - Minus Morgal. More black metal. Love this band.
Earth - Hibernaculum. Loved...LOVED The Bees Made Honey in the Lions Skull so I wanted to check something else out. Haven't given it a listen.

I've purchases a couple more Andrew Bird albums since some more of his stuff appeared. Really liking him right now.

Some other stuff I've liked lately:

    Blue Giant - Target Heart
Richmond Fontaine - $87 and a Guilty Conscience
    The Dodos - Visiter
    Stars - Sad Robots

I've bought waaay too much music this year. So many of my purchases have only been played once or twice. Kinda makes it hard to judge their quality. Must slow down next year!
