  • The Absence of Truth is quite good. Just gave a few songs a listen/download. They remind me a little of Minus The Bear.

Really? That's interesting. I wouldn't have made that analogy myself but it's certainly an interesting thought! I'll have to play them back/back.

Tell them you love them. Never let the mundane, the unimportant, or worse, the misunderstood, be the final words of parting.

    Tell them.

Just signed up for the trial. Netflix has an offer that gives 35 free downloads (instead of 25).

Anybody got any good blues recommendations?
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

My blues knowledge is very limited outside of :

The Black Keys (who I assume you've heard, but if not, be prepared for one of the greatest days of your life): http://www.emusic.com/artist/The-Black-Keys-MP3-Download/11528699.html
    This Etta James Album: http://www.emusic.com/album/Etta-James-Blues-In-The-Night-Volume-1-The-Early-Show-Etta-J-MP3-Download/10592238.html
    & The Black Angels: http://www.emusic.com/album/The-Black-Angels-Passover-MP3-Download/10910321.html

I'd love some good recomendations as well.

They might be the best post rock band I've heard. I need to play them more but Absence of Truth was phenomenal. Needless to say, I didn't sleep.

awesome. perfect CD to start with. Panopticon is my favorite however Absence is incredible.

I am in the process of downloading now, however I just heard of this guy over the weekend.

Joe Bonamassa. For what it is worth he was voted Best Blues Guitarist by Guitar Player magazine.

I am downloading Sloe Gin and I'll let you all know what I think later. The reviews seem favorable.

OK, I pulled down some John Lee Hooker (Best of John Lee Hooker, vol. 1), and I'm very happy with it. One of those guys who I've heard a few tracks from, but know that I have to listen to a bunch more...

I just remembered there is an Albert King/SRV 1983 Live CD out there (or WAS out there, I grabbed it years ago). I'd seek that out for sure. I also picked up some Buddy Guy, Live at the Checkerboard Lounge and one other I forget the name of.

As far as the Joe Bonamassa goes (for anyone who cares) it is pretty good. He leans more on the contemporary blues side, more Keb Mo then SRV. It is fairly radio friendly. There is no question he is an absolute monster on the guitar. He doesn't dive into guitar masterbation however you get the idea he could rip the heads off of 97% of the guitar players out there if he wanted to. Very tasteful. I would recommend the title track Sloe Gin if you want an idea. I am intrigued enough to get the other CD out there but not enough to overwhelmingly recommend Sloe Gin.

I just downloaded the Bloodshot Records Free Label Sampler 2007: Yr Welcome, World:

    http://www.emusic.com/album/Various-Artists-Bloodshot-Records-Bloodshot-Records-Free-Label-Sampler-2007-Yr-Welc-MP3-Download/11116130.html

Haven't listened yet, but I'm sure there should be at least a couple good songs on there. And it's free, so it can't hurt to try!

Thanks for posting. I picked it up last night. Also got

Bad Brains - their first record
Mountain Goats - All Hail West Texas
Fog - forget title, however it is just a single. I had to download since Jesu did a remix of the track.

I have given the Bishop Allen a few spins. I like. Read a review that had them sounding like a less pretentious Wayne Coyne. I don't find Wayne pretentious at all however I can see the comparison.

My latest download is The Magnolia Electric Co by Songs: Ohia. This album is gorgeous! My only disappointment is that I'd been putting this one off for so long. I think my next download will be a Magnolia Electric Co album if not another by Songs: Ohia.
  • Downloaded songs from these 4 albums recently:

Jason Collett - Prodicals: Enjoyed most of the songs, very different from Idols of Exile
    http://www.emusic.com/album/Jason-Collett-Prodigals-MP3-Download/11032066.html

Okkervil River - The Stage Names: I was very suprised I hadn't heard more about this album, it is tony the tiger grrrrrrreat
    http://www.emusic.com/album/Okkervil-River-The-Stage-Names-MP3-Download/11071092.html

Deerhunter - Cryptograms: Was very selective with album, some songs are very tedious and similar, Lake Somerset, Heatherwood, Crytograms are all very good songs
    http://www.emusic.com/album/Deerhunter-Cryptograms-MP3-Download/10989052.html

The Cave Singers - Invitation Songs: Had to be very selective here as well, some songs are indistinguishable

Yeah I think the vocals have similar tone and cadence in both groups.

Also the prominace and style with which both bands utilize the drums.

Check these tracks by Minus the Bear: Absinthe party at the fly honey warehouse, Booyah Achieved, This ain't a surfin movie, & I'm not totally down with rob's alien

Maybe I am way off base--but that was the first thing that came to my mind when I was checking out Isis.
  • the cult - 'sonic temple'

I think that Bishop Allen is one of the better pickups this year. Rain is my feel good song of 2007. Freaking love it.

Magnolia Electric Co - Songs: Ohia is a stunner for sure!
I like the Deerhunter record as well.
Cult - Sonic Temple takes me back. Good stuff on there.

    What I downloaded yesterday...

Summoning - Stronghold. Atmospheric Black Metal. I am drawn to this type of music of late.

And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - their first one. For whatever reason, I haven't checked these guys out until now.

Forgotten Woods - Race of Cain. More Black Metal. Can't recommend this one at all. Just flat out strange.

Caspian - The Four Trees. Can't wait to dive into this one.

I plan on using my downloads next month to catch up on 2007 releases. I may have to go for the Bishop Allen CD since so many people seem to enjoy it.

Can't wait until my downloads renew Saturday!

FINALLY got around to this. I found the PERFECT mood for listening to classical music, this Vanska piece in particular.

stuck bumper to bumper traffic, snowing like crazy, streets are an ice rink, late as hell for work. I actually enjoyed myself.

I couldn't figure out why the music didn't hit me at first until I realized I told you that I had Beethoven's 9th when I had his 6th. yikes. Anyway, I did recognize pieces of this, I have found I don't care much for vocals, I can enjoy the chorus chants as I find that to be more of an instrument then an actual voice (did that make sense?).....need....more.... coffee.

Anyway, another great suggestion from you folks, so keep this one going.

I've been stocking up on Gillian Welch. Time (The Revelator) and Soul Journey. The one Bicycle Thief recording on emusic is very good also.

  • Recent downloads for me:

    Emily Loizeau - http://www.emusic.com/artist/Emily-Loizeau-MP3-Download/11850248.html
Great stuff if you enjoy French music. She has some English gems as well.

The Dirty Projectors - Rise Above http://www.emusic.com/album/The-Dirty-Projectors-Rise-Above-MP3-Download/11090713.html
Probably not for everyone but I like it.

Drew Danburry - Besides: Are We Just Playing Around Out Here Or Do We Mean What We Say http://www.emusic.com/album/Drew-Danburry-Besides-are-We-Just-Playing-Around-Out-Here-Or-Do-MP3-Download/10897319.html
Drew's a good friend of mine and possibly the nicest human alive. Again, might not be for everyone.

    My latest downloads:

    1. Yeasayer - All Hour Cymbals
Apparently this is getting some buzz in the "indie" circles. Basically indie rock meets world music. I haven't quite decided if I like the album or not, but it's certainly different. May turn out to be better background music than anything else.

    2. Lambchop - Is a Woman
This may be another background music buy. Very understated with lots of piano. The lyrics are interesting, but things get a bit samey after a while. It's great for bedtime music though.

I've got 20 downloads left through Dec. 31 and way too many items on my Save for Later list. So much pressure!

And I love Gillian Welch, by the way! I've had Time (The Revelator) and Soul Journey for a year or two - they're both gorgeous. Revival is on my future downloads list. I'm glad to see she's available on e-music.
