Any reccommendations?

Ive been playing my old Strat for years but, there was an accidenst and the neck snapped in half [dont ask], and I was wondering what would you reccommend for someone who is primarily playing what would be a "Nu-Metal"-like style except for more intricate bass playing, and more obscure time signatures, and actual soloing, and actual drumming, etc etc [essentially Prog Nu Metal]. Anyway, I've been playing that guitar for a while now and essentially forgot most of the differences between different guitar types.

    If you are asking for recommendations for a new guitar, for the style you mention, I would use an ESP. I play similar prog metal (Dream Theater). I have a custom KH-1, and I love it. I also have a Jackson soloist, which I like a lot. Both these guitars use EMG active pickups, which help produce a really heavy chunk. The neck on the ESP is fast and geared to precise finger work. Do you like Mesuggah?

    Yea, I like some of Meshuggah's stuff, and I'm deff buying a new guitar, It's not like my strat was in any sort of good condition, before the accident, and I'm on the ESP site now http://www.espguitars.com/ and just out of curiousity how are ESP's for low string [standard E-A-D] tapping?

    I have never had any problems doing any kind of special technique on these guitars. I have not done much low string tapping myself, but I can set the action very low on the lower strings. I just pulled mine out and tried some, and it feels as easy as tapping on the low strings. Also, these guitars work really well for drop tunings. I can get my low E string down to C# and it stays in tune.

    Second on the Schecters. My friend has a semi-hollow Schecter frankly it's a really versatile guitar, does everything from acoustic rythym with the piezo to hard rock/metal with the bridge pup to clean stuff on the neck. Great sound all around.
    If idle hands are the devil's workshop, he must not be very productive.

    I'm a fan of ESP. The ltrd series are very good huitars. The MH-2, KH602 etc are super shredder guitars. Don't lete anyone tell you that the active pups are no good for cleaner styles either.
    I have a KH-2 which I love, a littel more expensive, but superbly built and a neck from heaven. I call it my "no excuses" guitar. If I can't play something on that, I just can't play it.

    Mind you for tone, all round versatility and unbeatable style, a Gibbo Les Paul Standard is very hard to beat too. They aren't really shredders guitasr though, the fatter necks and the relaatively limited upper fret access slows things down, but they are tone monsters.

    I second luchlespian's opinion on the active pups and clean tones, especially the humbuckers. You can get very ringy and chimey clean tones from them with the right amp and settings. They sound great, for example, on the clean channel of my Mesa Recto Recording preamp.

    Best thing aboot the EMG's is that you can crank the amp to just before break-up and play clean, but then push the amp into overdrive really easily with them.

    Or you can just play raucous metal too !!
