I am amazed at how good it sounds and I thought the Gearheads here would appreciate it.

    Yup. It's actually pretty simple to do, just set up a basic transistor switch circuit or use an op-amp connected to a batter and viola, instant amplifier. The only thing that will realistically make it sound crappy is the size of the speaker and the fact that the cabinet is, essentially, a tin box.

    Definately portable though and cool for a DIY project.
    If idle hands are the devil's workshop, he must not be very productive.

    This circuit could be built for $10-15 taxes incl in about 30 mins. Simple 8 pin op amp with a mosfet on the input, a variable potentiometer, and a few capacitors and resistors to hold it up. I like the altoids idea. There's a similar headphone amp design like this.
