Digital 8 track help question

I have been wanting to get rid of my Tascam four track and pick up something a bit better. The reason is how noisy the Tascam is. I want to upgrade my recording gear but I want to know if a digital 8 track would be much better. I just want something that is less noisy and static-y. Any recommendations? Nothing over $750 please, thats my limit.

    you recording to actually make a presentable peice of work? or just to capture ideas, band sessions? this will help in what you need

    a semi presentable piece of work. we are not recording to send CD's to a label or radio station or anything but it kinda takes the fun out of it when you know no matter what you record its gonna sound crappy on playback.

    the tascam is fine for just catching ideas but it is so damn noisy and muffled no matter what is being recorded into it. I mean it records on tapes which are not the best for noise so I was thinking digital had to be better. Is it?

    At $750, you might be limited in your options. I'd look for a Mackie Spike

    If you need more tracks, you need more money. Get a Spike and some decent mic cables and mic's. You could do that easily for under $750. Check it out.

    That leaves you 130 bucks to buy a pair of headphones, or an SM-57 and a decent case of beer.

    That would be an extremely powerful setup for $750. You would have two decent multi-patten condensers for stereo recording, THE workhorse dynamic mic, and a decent interface to your computer, with some respectable though basic DAW software to boot. Your ability to record better tracks would not be limited by your gear.
