hey i'm a drummer as well, but have only been playing for a year. i started out on a early 90's pearl export and after about 9 months of playing on that set i wanted a better set, just because it was a pretty cheap sound. now i have a gretsch catalina maple set. its actually a fairly beginner set, only 700 bux (no hardware) its a 6 piece. 18X22 bass, 5.5X14 snare (i believe) 10,12,14,16 toms.

starting out on a cheaper set is important, but don't get caught up in it too long, because a better sounding set really adds to your playing. if you feel like your playing well for the amount of months/years/wahtever you have been playing, then see about getting a new set if you want. i was very happy with my gretsch, and all though i SUCK at tuning drums, it does sound better, especially the bass drum which sounds great.

as for cymbals, do not buy cheap cymbals, cheap cymbals are worse than cheap drums IMO. stay away from sabian b8's b8 pros, zildjian zbt's, paiste pst-3's.
paiste pst-5's are the best cheap cymbals around IMO. or you can step up to paiste alphas. i own paiste alphas (90's versions of them, not the new model's) and for a beginner starting out, their fine. but after a year of playing, i am really looking for a better sound.

oh and watch out with cymbals, as they can be more expensive then the drums themselves, and more cymbals is not as important as you think. originally i wanted like 3 splashes, 3 crashes, a ride, hi hats, 2 chinas. that is overkill. im happy with my set up now (hi hats,ride,2 crashes, splash, china) maybe a third crash down the road though.

wow that was alot....hope this helped out.

Why is starting out on a cheaper set important ???
    Music is not a competetion.
  • back to dave's snares

are you actually building the shell yourself? Keller is a company that provides shells to virtually EVERY drum company (Tama, Rogers, ludwig, DW) going back to the 60's/70's drum shells have been manufactured by Keller. Chances are the Brady snare is made from a Keller shell. You can get a maple keller shell too.

  • ok what about dave's snare on the recording of GO and their MTV Singles celebration performance? and 1993 MTV Video music awards. i think it's a picollo anyone knows what really it is ?
  • chances are it's a keller shell

Brady Drums do NOT use Keller shells.

After watching it on YouTube just now, it turns out the Singles video is the one I was talking about in my previous post. The drum is a Pearl Free Floater, easily identifiable by the silver free-floating system on the bottom half of the drum. Should be a 14x3.5 if my eyes serve me correctly, again, most likely maple.

    Hope that helps.

you really think it's a maple shell not a metal shell ? i think i saw it shining ? i think he used the same snare on their MTV awards performance of Jeremey back in 1993
