I watched the Cornice DVD, and I noticed Mike playing an old strat. It looks like its been to hell and back, does anyone know the history behind it? Its got a sunburst finish that looks like its peeling (if thats possible?). I looked on giventowail.com, no such luck.

Original 1959 Stratocaster
Sunburst w/ Rosewood Fingerboard
Pretty sure it's been with him as long as he's been with the band. The finish is indeed peeling. In the guitar world, we call that a "relic'd" look. Sometimes Fender sells brand new guitars already "relic'd". I think it's pretty stupid to pay more for a guitar that's been damaged for you (kind of like those Abercrombie and Fitch 'destroyed' jeans). I don't know if there's anything else I can ramble off about it right now.Camden I '06, Camden II '06, Bonnaroo '08, Camden I '08, Camden II '08, Philly Spectrum II/III/IV '09, MSG I '10, MSG II '10, Made In America '12, Wrigley '13, Brooklyn II '13, Philly I '13, Philly II '13, ...0 -
He got it in late 94/early 94. Debut'd at SNL in 94 from what I can assert.
Part of a contract extension/signing bonus when PJ re-negotiated their contracts early on. Thanks for the info. I bought a Strat with Sunburst/Rosewood combo, just wondering how long before mine turns that way.

How long til yours becomes relic'd?
Years of everyday playing, wear and tear. Keep in in as best condition as you can though. Don't destroy the guitar. I've had my strat for 11 years, and kept it in as best condition as i could, but there are plenty of knicks and little things here and there.
A 50's era strat, you can probably get one between 28-45
good luck

Keep in mind the finishes are a lot thicker on the new guitars and therefore, dont age as well.OffHeGoes29 wrote:Thanks for the info. I bought a Strat with Sunburst/Rosewood combo, just wondering how long before mine turns that way.

Keep in mind, Mike also has '56, '58, '59, and '62 strats as well. I know he used two different ones that look almost identical on different versions of Nothin As It Seems back in 2000. One has a maple fretboard and the other had a rosewood.Grand Rapids '04, Detroit '06

The maple fretboard is from the later months of 59 I believe. All 59 strats were with a rosewood fretboard until late August when a few were produced with maple fretboards. this one happens to be a lot rarer than the regular 59 strat we see.9/29/96, 8/29/98, 9/8,11/98, 7/28/99, 8/23,24,25/00, 10/13/00, 4/15/03, 4/30/03, 7/8,9,12,14/03, 10/1/04, 9/30/05, 10/1/05, 5/4,5,13,27,28/06, 6/1,3/06, 6/19,20,22,24,25,27/08, 7/1/08, 8/4,5,7,16/08, 8/21/09, 10/27,28,30,31/09, 5/15,17,18,20,21/10, 9/2/12, 10/18,19,21,22,25/130

There are picks of a lot of Pearl Jam guitars that Mike Lull has worked on at the above site, including the guitar in question. My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.0 -

My guess is he dropped $8-10,000 on it.Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"

I think it's more due to the material used.
Modern Fenders use Polyurethane lacquer which is virtually bomb-proof.
Vintage Fenders used nitro-cellulose lacquer, which, over time and playing, will change colour, give finish-checking, etc.Brixton Academy, London: 14/07/93

I've always loved this guitar of Mike's. So much so that I purchased a Crate Fat Strat that looks nearly identical to it. I don't have the money for the Fender, and normally only play humbucker equipped guitars, so with this guitar I got the look and the sound I wanted.9-6-98 KNOXVILLE, TN

WHOA! Thanks for posting those links! Sooo cool!
I notice one thing about the Strat and Les Paul -- for as thrashed as those guitars are, those fretboards/fingerboards are DAMN clean!
Now if anyone could ID Eddie's little Parlor Guitar :-([sic] happens0 -
Currently (2008) a 1959 Sunburst Stratocaster with maple fretboard (in Excellent Condition) sells between $38,000 & $53,000.OffHeGoes29 wrote:How much does a 50's era strat go for?
