is the ts9dx worth looking at?

    It depends on what sound you want. Mike and Stone both use ts9's. The DX has those other features that don't really sound any better. I would go with the ts9.

    so it's just extra junk to get in the way? no real improvements in sound?

    The other functions on the Ts9dx only make it muddier, or really dry. If you want that Pearl jam sound, Ts9. Thats what I think.
