    I have so many advatntages, i am so privileged, but nevertheless, i feel like shit. I should feel better, but i dont. I have all those advantages, but i cant use them. Like an empty cup in the middle of the see. the see is full of water, and the cup is surrounded by it, and against all odds, the cup is empty. like the character in the song. his life has got all the (american) advantiges on him, but its no use for him. His lips are shakin. (loneliness, yes, but not only loneliness. the song is more open, I'd say. )

    he's a wreck, and the empty cup has the potential to be drowned by this mass of life around him that has the potential to destroy him...

    keep in mind the rest of the lyrics, not just the few lines around it.

    "my empty shell seems so easy to crack" - similar concept to above

    "i dont know who ill ask" - no one to turn to....
