Light Years

Wow, I love this song. Only recently found such a strong adoration of the song. Some of Ed's best lyrics in my opinon.

Ive used hammers made out of wood.
I have played games with pieces and rules.
I undeciphered tricks at the bar, but now youre gone.
I havent figured out why.
Ive come up with riddles and jokes about war.
I figured out numbers and what theyre for.
Ive understood feelings and Ive understood words but how could you be taken away?

And wherever youve gone and wherever we might go.
It dont seem fair. today just disappeared.
Your light reflected now. reflected from afar.
We were but stones. your light made of stars.

With heavy breath awakened regrets.
Back pages and days that could have been spent together but we were miles apart.
Every inch between us becomes light years now.
No time to be void or save up on life.
Oh, you got to spend it all.

And wherever youve gone and wherever we might go.
It dont seem fair. you seam to like it here.
Your light reflected now. reflected from afar.
We were but stones. your light made of stars.

And wherever youve gone and wherever we might go.
It dont seem fair. today just disappeared.
Your lights reflected now. reflected from afar.
We were by stones. your light made of stars.

This song reminds me of my dog (died in March)...and now when I hear it, I tear up a little bit...We had her for 15 years, and it really hurt to let go...

She did seem to like it here...and truly, her light made us stars..

"And wherever youve gone and wherever we might go.
It dont seem fair. you seemed to like it here.
Your light's reflected now. reflected from afar.
We were but stones. your light made of stars."

It's such a beautiful piece of poetry...and when I hear it, I really miss my sweet little pinkerton...

yeah i've been feeling the same way. i've always liked the song but on my way back to school after thanksgiving i found that song come on quite a bit as i shuffled through the pearl jam on my ipod. i really had the opportunity to sit quitely and take in the lyrics. it's a beautiful song, not just the lyrics, but the arrangement of the music and the way eddie's voice is so fluid, like it's not taking any effort for him at all to sing. love it!

this song became very personal to me when my father died. and the nuckel head that i am, when i met eddie in toronto i was in such aw of meeting him that i did'nt express it to him. and that was the one thing i wanted to thank them for because it helped put a rough time in my life into some perspective.

Every time i hear Light Years it reminds me of 2000, when I was in India for three months - away from my girlfiriend - it reminds me of her - although we're no longer together...Still though...Beautiful song....The man is a lyrical genius....H

  • Among the best lyrics they've ever done. However, I wish they had redone the studio version. Not some of Ed's best singing.

I agree, that is also my favorite part of the song. Now probably one of my top songs ever. It's just awesome, and I love the way Ed's voice just makes the whole song just flow so smoothly.

I agree, actually. It is almost like he is singing through his teeth.

I do love the song though.

If by shamefully produced, you mean produced quite well, then yes, shamefully produced.

I will agree with you though that more songs off Binaural sound better live than most other PJ albums. [Of The Girl, INSIGNIFICANCE! to name a few.]

I never really sat down a "really listened" to these lyrics until recently and they really are beautiful. I always "heard" them, but never tried to understand them or apply any meaning to them. After really listening, I have a new appreciation for this song. It truly is amazing.

It is amazing how many PJ songs you can say this about. That shows you what geniuses they are with their lyrics.
