I always thought it could be about a child that was given up for adoption and finally meets his mother. She feels guilty but he tells her its ok, lets live for today and not for what happened in the past.
But it could really be about anything or anyone reflecting.
great tune could'nt believe it when they played it at the astoria,
You can spend your time alone
Redigesting past regrets, Oh
Or you can, come to terms and realize
You're the only one who cannot forgive yourself, Oh
Makes much more sense to live in the present tense
You know how there's those defining and life-changing PEARL JAM songs?
Super therapeutic songs that impact your life is such a huge way.
Songs that speak to the inner most part of you like a wise old friend and put everything into crystal clear perspective.
Songs that change your state of mind in the most postive way imagineable.
Well...I think PRESENT TENSE is a prime example of such a song.
I remember hearing it for the first time when NO CODE first came out. The lyrics floored me. I could instantly feel it working it's magic. Then a few months later I heard it at a time when I needed it the most. It was one of the first PJ songs that healed me when I was broken and changed my entire outlook. The advice that stems from it is simple but sooooo powerful. I would actually sit down friends that were going through hard times and have them listen and read the lyrics. I felt like I was promoting a product. haha. Seriously though. PJ therapy. It works. And again, PRESENT TENSE is a prime example.
This will also always remain one of my fav LIVE songs! I always get excited when I see it on the set...which has actually confused people on the board before since they play it often. Whatever! They obviously don't understand. The sing alongs! This>>one of the greatest breakdowns EVER>>breakdown?? Unfuckinbelievable!! Everything about this magic transcends beyond belief in a live setting.
Lotsa love for this wise old friend. Does it inspire?
My god does it ever!!

oh wow, what a great description! you've really summed it up better than i can...it's therapeutic is right. i think along with release this is one of the only songs that can actually bring a tear to my eye.
A great song, but I cannot listen to the studio version anymore. It's too slow, the live version is much better.

I got my Lance Mercer book in the mail along with a cd No Code. I went through a break-up 10 years ago and haven't had a copy of it. My 10c copy arrived and I spent the day walking and listening to the words. Wow!
What a difference time makes. I loved this album back then, now I hear different songs. Present tense. Lukin. Hearing In My tree was a treat too.
I love the studio version of Present Tense. It's great live too!

I completely agree with you. I probably said this in one of my very first posts when I first became a member on here. But I can relate to that song so well. I used to have terrible feelings of guilt about things from my childhood that any normal person probably would have forgotten about years ago
The first time i heard that song I fell in love with it. It happened to be the day of my first Pearl Jam concert, and they played it. Has so much more value to me now. Eddie let the fans sing the first chorus and it was one of the most chilling moments of my life when we hit the "Ohhhh" and raised the note

love this song, it's all about perspective. nice reminder too to not beat yourself up over the past as well. i was *so* happy to get this at the SF show
This song is my mantra when old regrets surface & start to comsume me, so to hear it live in Adelaide, when I'd just dealt with yet more old crap brought back to light by family members who just can't move on - my goodness. This song is absolutely cathartic.
Love the idea to play it at my funeral - wonder if my family would still not get it?
