I don't get the love for betterman and wishlist. They aren't so great.

    I have no signature

i don't get that some people think betterman is a love song.

I know. That sounds almost like the same story as with Alive. On storytellers Ed lets everyone know the story behind it and how it was misunderstood. Of course it changed, but to the casual PJ listener, they would think that 'I'm still alive' has always been a good thing

I believe that Betterman is a love song (sorf of) - it's about a relationship gone bad.
And the thing with Yellow ledbetter is... well, I guess no one except Ed really gets it.

Yeah, Ed sings it at the end of their shows when he is so wasted on red wine and Heineken.
He doesnt really know what is going to come out of his mouth.

  • Love the guitar work on Yellow Ledbetter...lyrics???? don't know. Nice melody, though.

Rats is about the Press or Paparazzi... similar to BUGS.
I kind of like the fact that I have no idea what Eddie is saying in Yellow Ledbetter... I too just make up my own words, add a few yelps here and there and the song is complete.

As for a song I just don't get, well, let me see...

Apart from the ones already mentioned in this thread, I have come up with my own interpretation of pretty much every song.

Oh I have one, why in Daughter does he sing "Don't call me daughter"
    Never understood that line.
Has it got do with low self esteem?

That line was confusing me too, but now I think, that it's because the mother-daughter relationship is screwed up. So she has no right to call her daughter, because she is an awful mother.
Well, but that's just my opinion.

Parachutes seems to flip flop between sentiments. I don't know if it is a song about staying together, just meeting, or about to leave.

Oh yes he knows what's coming out of his mouth:
This was sung by Eddie Vedder during the Arnhem show (08-29-2006) after the solo:

Oh, I'd like to see'm I'd stay in holland forever and a day.....
Oh I know and I phone and I couldn't left the message, but I'm stuck in the USA...

Yep. But I think the "the picture kept will remind me" line makes no sense.

Sorry, maybe he is just so wasted most of the time at the end of the show that he slurrs his words and I can't understand what they are.

    In reference to the lyrics:
Nobody is stuck here either. If he wants to get up and move to the Netherlands, be my guest. They can make music anywhere. He threatened to leave when President Bush was first elected, but he is still here.

Love Boat Captain -- Oh I understand it well enough, i just don't GET it...

As fer Yellow Ledbetter, facinating Mr. Spock, they don't actually list the lyrics on the 10 site, but you can google them and find a rendition of the studio lyrics and uh, yeah ... that pretty much goes to show why he just kinda makes up the lyrics for the most part everynight.

I believe it's basically a story of a family out on the porch of house as they are told the news that a member of the family has been killed in a war -- perhaps from the perspective of the deceased ... or his brother ... or a neighbor.

Many of the impromptu sessions seem to involve answering machines or calling up someone to get an explanation... or something.

Just saw it in a list of Top 50 downloaded Guitar Tablature! (Only PJ song in the list I saw....)

    'don't call me daughter
    not fit to
the picture kept will remind me'

the mother is a bad mother. she is not fit enough to call her own child daughter cause she is certainly no mother. the picture inside the girl's head, her memories, are what will always remind her of that.

i love that song so much.
