How can you have a daughter if you're not a mother?

It all makes sense, thank you.

Love the guitar work on Yellow Ledbetter...lyrics???? don't know. Nice melody, though.
yea,i agree! Seen many attempts on trying to work out the lyrics. Gotta be the best pj song written, that and 'Why go'.

    'don't call me daughter
    not fit to
the picture kept will remind me'

the mother is a bad mother. she is not fit enough to call her own child daughter cause she is certainly no mother. the picture inside the girl's head, her memories, are what will always remind her of that.

i love that song so much.

    Maybe the girl is adopted?

neh. the mother has too many expectations on the girl that she can't live up to. no matter how hard she tries she can't be what her mother wants. the mother resents her for it, just as the daughter 'hates' the mother for those unreal expectations. why can't she love her daughter for who she is, not what she wants her to be.
this is my opinion anyway. :)

  • Sorry, maybe he is just so wasted most of the time at the end of the show that he slurrs his words and I can't understand what they are.

    In reference to the lyrics:
Nobody is stuck here either. If he wants to get up and move to the Netherlands, be my guest. They can make music anywhere. He threatened to leave when President Bush was first elected, but he is still here.

Do you often make it a point to go completely out of your way to take offense to something?

  • You know, maybe Daughter is a prequel to Why Go. I think they can be seen as one continuing story.

  • I know the lyrics to Immortality. But what is it really about? The lyrics don't make sense to me. I know this is probably an obvious one. But please someone fill me in. What's with the "stripped and sold Mom and the auctioned Forearm"?
  • i guess it always depends on your own experiences as for Daughter i dont take it as the mother being the "bad" person, just somone bad in the childs life and the child is ashamed of whats happened and doesnt feel they deserve to be called a "daughter" as they are not fit to be one.. etc.. and the pictures kept is the pictures in the childs mind of the bad shit that happened will always be with her through her life and will never be forgoten, but hey she will rise above!!!

I don't get Hey foxy mop etc... It's just plain creepy.

yeah me too, i duno what the point of the song is, but i also thnk that its not sposed to have a certain meaning. all i know is that its real recordings from patients in a mental hospital.....fukin well scary.

and i dont get the title. like in relavence to the song. (even though someone does say stupid mop, its not really about that one patient)
    theres other voices too

    anyways haha, its really creepy!
  • neh. the mother has too many expectations on the girl that she can't live up to...

yeah, thats true, but i think daughter is actually about an abusive relationship between the mother/daughter (possibly father?) because the daughter not only cant live up to the expectations, but because she is slow

eddie was reported saying so, and at the end of the song he says "the shades go down"

they pull the shades down so no one sees them beating her.

just what i think! lol and from what ive heard/read

maybe daughter is about his sister.
  • I think a lot of songss on the different albums create their own stories when put together. On Vs. I tend to think the storyline goes Daughter into Rearviewmirror into either Elderly woman or Leash. Sort of a story of a girl rising above the pain and leaving everythingbehind to find a new life or home. Ideas?

Hi, I'm a newbe and this is my first post. I also like this song a lot, but I can't figure out what it is really saying.

At first I thought that the shades going down might be a metaphor for the child developing autism or some other disability, and then the parent loves the child less for this, making them unfit. But after reading some of these replies I think that the child being abused by the parent behind the shades is also plausible. If the abuse was inflicted by a step-parent, then that might tie in with the lyric about the picture, since there would be no biological resemblance.

In one live concert DVD that I saw, this song was immediately proceeded by an epilog with the lyric, "It doesn't matter, I'll still love you anyway."

So go figure. Any other thoughts on this?

I know. That sounds almost like the same story as with Alive. On storytellers Ed lets everyone know the story behind it and how it was misunderstood. Of course it changed, but to the casual PJ listener, they would think that 'I'm still alive' has always been a good thing

I remember long ago eddie saying that he didn't want to tell what Alive was about because it would ruin it for alot of people, because people interpret songs differently based on their lives and experiences. And i have always been grateful for that, because i have used pj music to get through alot of this "all encompassing trip" (like alot of others, i'm sure). If back then he would have spilled it, i think it would have left me feeling a little empty and let down. I needed that song and it came at just the right time. He probably knew that alot of people would have felt the same way, so he didn't want to take that away from us. I'm sure he has songs that are like that to him, and he knows how it feels to have that one thing to relate to when there seems to be nothing else at all to relate to. He is so great. He does care about us. I love this f-ing band!! Hawaii here i come!!!

Thats what I always thought, or maybe an old pic of when the mother wasnt so bad?

I always thought that it meant that i will have the picture to remind me of you, because i don't actually want to see you at all anymore. But, i am coming from the point of view of a girl who's real mother abandoned her at the age of 7. I guess i can really relate to that song. Everyone has their own interpretation. That's what makes it so great!!

  • Hail Hail. Is it about not wanting to be together? Wanting to be together?

I always saw it as a relationship on the rocks that he's trying to hold together as it slips away.
