Do I ever wish that PJ, and more specifiaclly Eddie, didn't have issues with these lyrics, cause the song is amazing!!
there was issues? what were they because I've been wondering why the lyric version was never properly recorded
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
i love the instrumental and it should be left that way.....its great..!
no no no!!!! the lyrics version is far better.

Hey sorry guys, made this post then didn't re-visit for a bit. Ya, about the song, I guess it was originally written for Ten, I think the story goes that Eddie wrote the lyrics at a time that he was having some problems with his brother, which shortly after were resolved, and therefore it was a vengeful song about someone he'd mended the relationship with. Follow this link if you want to read the lyrics.
The song with vocals is AMAZING though, but because of the lyrcis I think it's only been played once or something, and is also why we got the soloing version on Lost Dogs instead of the original. I personally think the version with vocals is WAY better, one of my favorite Ten era songs actually, the chorus and bridge are amazing. If you haven't heard it it's worth trying to find.
Be happy with what you got
You should be hard to be a brother
You should be happy with what we can do...
Oooh...hand over my face
I am related to my enemy...
Oooh...my house on fire
And my big brother come put the blame on me, yeah...
Oh, he's a pushin'
I'm being pushed from above
Oh, and a brother
Back to back back, better back off of him
You should not question at all his authority...
Oooh...use a flag as a bandaid
A-Stick 'em up, show us your pocket hypocrasy, yeah...
Oooh, in the closet, my pleasures
'Cause my big brother don't want to just let me be
Oh...oh, and I'm pushin'
Or if I could get above
Oh, and a brother
Back to back back, a-keep your back off...
Oh, and I'm pushin'
I'm being pushed from above
Oh, and a brother
Back to back a-back, a-better back off of him...
Yeah yeah yeah...oh...
Face down...brother...
Face down...yeah yeah yeah yeah...
Face down...yeah... (2x)
Oh...ooh...ah...
In my mind there's a clearing
Black clouds flow through grey still skies
And the birds don't even whisper...yeah...
I'm flying out...mmm...I'm flying...
Whoa...
Oh, back to back back, a-better back off
Back to back a-back, a better, better, better...
Back to back a-back, back a-back back...brother...
Face down...brother...
Face down...yeah yeah yeah a-yeah...
Face down...brother...oh...
Face down...almost...fired...
Face down...whoa...I got a gun...
Face down...
I got a gun... (2x)
Face down...I got a gun...
Whoa...face down...
Aah, fuck it, I'm just gonna go home, turn on the fuckin' TV...
..and watch the nightly news and drink a beer...
..like I could even change the world, yeah right...

I seem to cause my older siblings certain levels of anxiety, at least they tell me I do. My first instinct is to root for the little brother that's not the author, eh?
Excellent instrumental song, I hope they play it even just the Lost Dogs version. That would be beyond cool. If an entire Pearl Jam album was instrumentals as good as this one I would buy it in a heartbeat.

It's a great song and I love the lyrics. And even if it is a song that is about something that has happened in the past... thats cool. It's like a window back into that time, but I can understand why Eddie might not like to hear them again. Still I wish the lyric version was on Lost Dogs, because I do think the lyrics are awesome!

I completely agree...I think it's good that there are no lyrics because it gives you a chance to appreciate the instrumentals that just as meaningful and lyrics. It's cool to just listen to the music and get a sense of meaning through sound instead of though words. It makes my imagination work overtime and I LOVE IT!!
