whatsthefreezer wrote:Yeah awesome song. I was a little dissapointed when my Penn State official bootleg came in and Ed seemed like he didn't want to play the song at all. But if it's not his thing to play it anymore I totally understand. They've got plenty of other great songs. I just think that riff is one of the best Pearl Jam have ever had and those lyrics still get to me everytime.
They hadn't practiced or played it in forever! They had simply forgotten how to play it and Ed had forgotten most of the lyrics. I thought that was pretty evident. They play it right after Ed asks for requests. Not sure how it got requested, but I've always been under the impression that the guys were in a great mood, loving the crowd and whatnot, so decided to try. And they failed..........................................................................0 -

This is one of my Favs too...Just Bad*ss, full on attitude and yet what he's actually saying is very upstanding and remarkable...Overall I think it is just a reflection of who we now know he really is. Eddies in for the music, not the supermodels...and I dig it.0

Call me a retard, but why would it be hypocritical for them to play it now?
Am I missing something in the interpretation of this song or what??
Someone please tell me what this is about. Its really been bothering me for the last couple of days"Lick the dirt off Olajuwon's feet"0 -

OK. You're a retard.
hehe
Sorry....I couldn't resist.
But I don't think anyone can explain this without having it deleted or getting banned.
It has to do with a certain lead singer's personal life......
P.S. I don't agree with the hypocrisy theory anyway."This band has provided many people a soundtrack to their lives.." ~ CitizenRick0 -
So, anyway, let's back away from what little we know about the reality into the metaphorical of the song only - There's a song about Satan wearing blue jeans, from the disco era of the 70's and the singer was on Solid Gold (remember Solid Gold after Dance Fever and before Love Boat?) Anyway, say a woman called #A is at a party with a man #B, and along comes the Devil in Blue Jeans #Cx. We can assume that #Cx would try to look like Apollo as opposed to Big Boy. With this in mind, is it a reflection of a bad relationship for #A to think that #Cx is attractive and look away at something else, or can it be just a statement with no committment? I think that may be a little of what the song is about. I could be wrong, I never met Apollo. There is no such thing as leftover pizza. There is now pizza and later pizza. - anonymous

I remember Solid Gold and Dance Fever. (God help me, but I do)
And I tried to follow that scenario.
But I had to stop before my head exploded."This band has provided many people a soundtrack to their lives.." ~ CitizenRick0 -

Interesting. I always thought it was something to do with religion.
Then I thought it had something to do with Ticketmaster.
Guess I was wrong."Lick the dirt off Olajuwon's feet"0 -

this is a kick ass version 4/3/94. Isnt this the first time they played it live too?
great song. one of those that lets you know there's things out there gonna f with your head and make you do good or bad, and basically you're telling it to F off.....i love the 'jump off a clip dont need your help so back off'.I am the end of all your dreams...0 -
Someone (back in '03) offered an interesting interpretation that I have hung onto. They suggested that this song has to do with drug use or addiction. I'll explain.i've never slept in satan's bed
although i must admit...still visits my placewho made, who made up, made up the myth
that we were born to be covered in bliss?
Who decided that we should be able to be happy all the time?ah torture...follows reward...
follows torture...follows reward...
Ever been addicted to something?never shook satan's hand, look see for yourself
you'd know it if i had, that shit don't come off
This line would have to do with physical indications (i.e. needle marks, wight loss)
Again, it's just a theory. The original poster layed it out much better.
PBM"We paced ourselves and we didn't rush through it and we tried to be as creative as our collective minds would let us be over some course of time instead of just trying to rush through a record"

I always kinda thought that myself - i think there are alot of drug references in alot of the songs and we just dont pick up on it......I also thought maybe a couple of lines of this had to do with temptation of women - b/c you know it had to happen ALOT.I am the end of all your dreams...0

It was actually Stone that wrote this song, its such a great song. I fell in love with the song the first time i heard it.0

I think this song is about the temptation not to sleep on your partner. "Already in love" "Who made, who made up, made up the myth That we were born to be covered in bliss? Who set the standard, born to be rich? Such fine examples, skinny little bitch Model, role model, roll some models in blood Get some flesh to stick, so they look like us I shit and I stink, I'm real, join the club I'd stop and talk, but I'm already in love."0
-
i think like many of pj's songs it's open for intepretation.. but it sure has a personal side related to the band ,like most Vitalogy.
provably we the fans should get our own personal interpretations, wich is very easy about this song.. everyone has felt temptation for something..
"i shit and i stink! i'm real join the club!
model role model roll some models in blood!
uhh..
i shit and i stink.. uh .. never suck satan's cock..
model role model roll some models in blood!
dont know the lyrics to my ouw fuckin song!
already.. uhh.. already something..
already.. go on and solo already.."

hypocritical or not, how much difference does it make??/
Anyway, I think it has to do with being faithful to your partner, and dealing with temptations. As far as the guys living up to what they say, they say a LOT, and really set the bar way up, and just remember they are human....not the easiest life...
This is a kick ass song still. one of my faves....Makes much more sense to live....in the present tense
I know I was born and I'll know that I'll die
The inbetween is mine, I am mine
