    At first, I wondered why Republicans would give him a voice, but that seems clear now. It's because the lines have already been drawn. Trump supporters will not be swayed by any information Smith divulges in this. It won't matter one bit. He could lay out in kindergarten speak how guilty Trump is and it wouldn't budge the needle. 
    Republicans know this, and all they need is a soundbite or two that something vaguely unethical was done in the pursuit of evidence, and bam, case closed, Trump is innocent, and it was all a witch hunt.

    I think Smith forced their hand for a public hearing  after releasing his ipening statement for the closed session. 

    There will be preformative soundbite bullshit and I doubt he'll be allowed to give complete answers. 

    but if they wanted to the could craft legislation to bar spec prosecutors going forward.

    President Trump broke the law, former special counsel Jack Smith told committee members Thursday at an appearance before the GOP-led House Judiciary Committee.
     
    Smith, who led investigations into Trump's alleged interference in the 2020 election and alleged mishandling of classified documents, is testifying publicly for first time about his probes.
     
    "President Trump was charged because the evidence established that he willfully broke the law, the very laws he took an oath to uphold," Smith said. "Grand juries in two separate districts reached this conclusion based on his actions as alleged in the indictments they returned."
