Driverless car/uber

3 times in Atlanta the last few days I drove in an uber with no driver. It didn't really bother me in the least. My wife was FREAKED OUT at 1st. She almost didn't get in the car. But yeah, who would have thunk it?
Take me piece by piece.....

Did you know it was going to be driverless when booking? or did the car just show up and there was NO driver?

The 1st one we were surprised. The info was right in front of us, but we didn't see it. We just hit the " accept ride" option.

The 2nd and 3rd time I knew exactly what I was getting  myself into.
It was the closest, cheapest, option. And like I said, it really didn't bother me.

I have a Tesla that comes with the self-driving.

I like it a lot in certain applications.  Overall, I am a really defensive, risk mitigating driver, so self driving isnt for me.  Even in its most 'chill' setting, it spends too much time close to other cars and changing lanes, and all that.  I also dont think I trust the camera-only approach to self driving.  Need some other sensors I think.

The self-parking on the other hand is amazing.

I am encouraging this so that all cars are driverless and I don't have to pay insurance anymore.

That's something I would do (Info right in front of me and I wouldn't notice).

I don't think I'm ready to jump in a driverless vehicle yet.

Ha. You think the insurance companies and their buddies in Congress haven't already devised a plan to get the public to pony up still even if the entire world were to go to self-driving vehicles that are proven 100% safe?

    I often ponder this.

Why the fuck would you need insurance if the cars are autonomous? The liability is literally out of your hands now.

I also wonder how the insurance companies are going to pry money from us when it does happen.

When I landed in Atlanta we took an uber to the airport. The driver was half asleep and I purposely talked to him for 30 minutes to make sure he stayed awake.
Same thing when I landed back home. The young driver I had was nodding at the wheel and telling me she only gets 4 hours a sleep a day.
Years back I made a taxi driver in Philly pull over and I had to explain to him that I wasn't in the mood for his 70 mile an hour driving, on side streets.

I have no problem with driverless cabs/ubers.

This just happened here in Austin. I'm not getting in something that an illicit actor could hack and send me into a tree or over a cliff.

I see both sides of the coin.. but I know human error plus distracted, drunk, drugs and just plain shitty driving all are way more problematic than the rare incident here n there with driverless. I took one from Hollywood to Hermosa in September at 4am after I always make the right decision not to drive on 2 plus drinks.. I had 4 that night.. I was amused by it
