An Homage to Cultural Icons In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the Icons of Pop Culture Gala returns Oct. 23 to MoPop (Tickets)! Mike will be in attendance as a special guest performer, ripping Jimi Hendrix’s ‘68 Strat in honor of his legacy. Take a step back to ‘95, when Mike discusses Jimi’s impact: It was another level of musicianship that I had no idea… it was from some other stratosphere or something. …The emotion that came out of his version of [the “Star Spangled Banner”] at Woodstock scared the hell out of me and gave me chills.. had a huge, huge impact on me. My favorite solo or favorite song is probably “Machine Gun” of all time, so I’ll listen to that and just go “oh my God, you know, this is the level that a guitar player could get to…” maybe he never will but if you can try to aspire to be that, you know, that’s the point. There’s other songs; his version of “All Along the Watchtower” is incredible. “Voodoo Child” with the percussion that comes in in the beginning and how haunting that is incredible, of course, amazing.. I could go on forever… Watch it (Here).
