According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that is the largest deficit a team has overcome to finish first in its division (since 1969) or league (pre-1969). The 1914 Braves (15 games back) previously held the record.

And while they had already clinched about an hour earlier, they finished it off with a three run walk off dinger in the 10th.

They have one of the best players in Baseball in a Jose Ramirez. He gets zero love from anyone outside of Ohio.

They have one of the best players in Baseball in a Jose Ramirez. He gets zero love from anyone outside of Ohio.

He is great. But it was all smoke and mirrors (and great managing). Tribe batted 226 for the year and last in run scored as well. Only team with a negative run differential to make the playoffs.

Kwan is very good too. But like last year, it came down to timely bullpen work.

The Boston Braves miracle comeback of 1914 is very well documented. And they shocked the 3 out of 4 years World Champion A's with a sweep in the World Series.

I'm not arguing that. I'm just saying MLB goes back to like 1903 with teh individual leagues longer than that. They are declaring this the biggest comeback and I hope it was. Data was just sketchier. No real point in arguing a throw-away comment.

What makes the comeback even more improbable than even the largest GB deficit is the fact that the team isnt great, or at least the parts.

They lost a rotation pitcher and arguably the best closer to gambling. They were a seller at the trade deadline. Very little star power.

Things just came together at once. The starters have an historic run going. Bullpen has been great. Bo Naylor is suddenly a dangerous hitter. Vogt is a good manager and they have manufactured timely runs. Ramirez and Kwan are star players who are overlooked due to market (although most baseball fans have been onto Jose for a couple years now).

I have no idea how this organization keeps finding good pitchers.

With all that said, the run isnt sustainable. Winning a 3 game series that involves Skubal will be tough. They arent going to start next season the way September has gone

Really nice series in the first round. Really looking forward to Cubs Padres most but I think all 4 are interesting. I can see Dodgers smacking the Reds but as a Phillies fan that one interests me.
