Cable TV alternatives/streaming services

I've had cable forever. Tired of my bill continuing to go up w/worse service than ever. I have Optimum fiber, and the tv picture is terrible. They're also now charging me for a WiFi extender after they told me it would be free.

What live TV streaming service do you have? Pros? Cons?

Thanks in advance.

We have Fubo.  I only have it on during the Fall/NFL/Football season/MLB Playoffs.  It is about $100 a month.  I like how you can subscribe or cancel/pause easily.  I have tried Hulu Premium and Youtube TV and prefer Fubo for both the interface as well as channel lineup.  I believe they all have 1 week trials.

Other than that, I have Prime, Netflix, and through my phone plan, I have Disney+, ESPN 3, and Hulu.  I use Netflix a lot, they have a lot of good content.  It all adds up.  We also "borrow" my father in law's sign-in credentials for HBO/Max App.
Oh yeah, I subscribe to MLB TV as well. For as much as I use it, for a yearly fee, it is well worth it.

One con is that if you get internet from your cable provider, they will jack the rate up once you cancel cable.  Im stuck with only 1 provider monopoly where I live.

In all, if I totalled it up, I am probably not saving all that much from cable... but I have freedom to get what I please, turn things on or off.

Also, it is great that I can get any of these services on any device, anywhere.

You have to be paying over $200 a month in streaming?  Then what does your internet connection run you?

    I dont think its $200.
Fubo: $100 (but only 5 months on, 7 off)
    Netflix $20
    MLB: Roughly $16

Prime and my cellphone I would have anyway.  Also, I would probably have Netflix anyway (and arguably the MLB TV).  All those things I had back in the day when we subscribed to Satellite TV.

Internet is gouging prices from Spectrum, about $100.

You would still pay for them on dish though.  I'm curious what MLB costs.

Also how do you have a bundle through your phone?  Is that a free trial?
  • I just checked the Disney bundle and its only 39 for premium.  So thats Hulu Disney and espn. Its only like 3.25 a month.

Mlb tv was $199 for the year.  I paid $50 extra though so Cleveland wouldn't be blacked out so I think its really $150

I never have problems w/Optimum internet (fast as hell and reliable), but it's the only high-speed option where I live.

The picture quality w/fiber is awful. Nowhere near as good as with coaxial. The stuff I stream always looks better.

I'm considering giving up sports and getting just TV. Giants are always on free TV. I could go without watching the Yankees. Giving up the Rangers would be tough. Lakers are on enough nationally.

I downloaded the Gotham Sports App, which is getting absolutely awful reviews. I couldn't believe the difference in quality. Last night's Yankees game on YES, and an old Rangers game on MSG, looked 10x better on the app than on their cable counterparts.

Now I'm going to compare YouTube TV, Hulu, and Fubo to see what I can get in my area vs. what I have now, and see how the prices shake out. Maybe I get GSA/Fubo for half of the hockey/NBA seasons. Who knows.

I've had youtubetv for like 5 years or so.

Pros- get all local channels, and most cable channels as well. Can pause/rewind live tv. Also unlimited "cloud service" DVR space for like a year.

Cons- Price! Keeps on going up. I think when I first got it, it was like $50 and has gone up every year. Now i think it's like $80 a month.

I saw that wrong.  Oh well.  I guess I'm not getting Disney then.

Cable bill went up AGAIN this week, for "service improvements". So now, landline phone service, 500 MBPS internet, WiFi extender, and their 3rd best TV package (basically everything but the movie channels) costs $266.

I called on the way to work to cancel, keep the internet, and get Hulu + Live TV and the Gotham Sports App.

He confirmed the new internet-only price of $109, and asked me if I wanted to finalize the cancel.

I asked him to reiterate the terms of his last offer, which I accepted:

-No phone service (never used it anyway, got it for the discount)

    -Same internet and WiFi extender

-Their best TV package, which includes HBO/Showtime/Starz

-$176.00 a month for the next year

-And not one, but TWO $80 credits, for this month’s bill and next month’s bill

So we’re getting more for less, and over the course of the next year, he saved us $1240.

I almost still canceled, because the streaming quality is much, much better, but the sheer financials made it a no-brainer IMO.

A crabby buddy whined about the time and effort this took. My view: I called on the way to work, and even though it took almost an hour, and I told them I wanted to cancel at least 5 times, saving $1240 > listening to BT & Sal talk about the World Series on WFAN.

That sounds like a good deal.

I get annoyed though having to call yearly and deal with a retention rep.  I used to have to do that with Sirius, forgot 1 year, cancelled it and never came back.  Used to dread that process/conversation

I also like to have the ability to turn on and off my services (I believe some cable companies allow you to put your account on hold, but not sure how it affects discounts).  I do not carry my major provider from February through August.

I did the retention dance with Sirius for YEARS. I finally canceled maybe literally as soon as the PJ/Stern interview ended lol. I used to be a Stern diehard, and was even on his show years ago. But I barely listened to him, and never listened to PJ Radio or anything else. I was paying the lowest possible price, $4/month for literally everything, and that price was in perpetuity, but after PJ was on, there was no reason for me to keep it.

  • got rid of cable 15 years ago. When I see ads for cable tv shows during sports, I just cringe at how awful they look.

Netflix (just switched to ad version, $7.99 a month as opposed to $24.99)
HBO/Crave (which I just found out can no longer be streamed on my PS4 as of this month, so now have to rejig my stereo setup)
    Disney +
    Prime
    Paramount +

borrow my parents cable sign in for sportsnet+ and TSN for sports
