Who is Lukin?

I did a search for this topic, but I couldn't find anything. "Lukin" has always been my favorite song and I understand what it is about, but who is Lukin? And why is it the title of the song?

I've heard that Lukin was a member of Mudhoney, but I couldn't find anything about this. Can someone shed some light for me on this topic and please tell me who the hell Lukin is?

Also, what is your favorite live version of Lukin? Too many favorites for me to choose.

And here's the version of Lukin I played him when we first brought him home so he'd know it was his theme song. I can't tell you HOW FUNNY to see him cocking his head at the computer when he heard it growl at him! :D

I thought he sung Lukin last year in Melbourne. I didn't realize he'd stopped singing it.

It's pretty fast paced lyrically in comparison to Blood. Maybe that's why? :)

I like the song, it just sounds weird now. Not as gritty as the studio version. I think he sings it different nowadays cus he can control his voice better like that. In one version (I think from Torino or Melbourne '06) it seems like he tried to sing the last verse like the studio version but he was all over the place... Oh well.

Yeah, I guess I don't really analyze it that much. I'm just happy to hear them anytime I get to hear them. I figure songs come out different everytime they do them, interpretations change, the band changes, the audience changes. It all adds to the experience for me, so I just enjoy. There's really only two kinds of Pearl Jam for me, mindblowingly awesome and orgasmic. :D Both are pretty damn good states to be in as far as I can see. :)

I thought that he did a great version of it at Lolla.

    Question 2.27:

This refers to Matt Lukin, a band member in the band Mudhoney. The song, as Eddie has described it, is just about Matt's place. In concert, Eddie has joked about how maybe Lukin should have been called "Can't find A Better Kitchen", a poke at the song "Better Man."

The way I heard the story, Ed liked Lukin's refrigerator so much that a song was written about it.
Presidential Advice from President-Elect Mike McCready: "Are you getting something out of this all encompassing trip?"
  • Definitely agree with the Lolla version. Matt was good friends with Kurt Cobain as well. I remember reading a lot about them in "Heavier Than Heaven"

I was looking at some info on the Boston Garden show from 04/11/94 and I remembered "Matt" and "Lukin".

I searched and found this thread. It's something I forgot about and I thought it could use a BUMP!

according to an article in Rolling Stone from 2006 - the song is about a stalker that Ed encountered earlier on when he was becoming famous.
    quotes from the article...

"Someone who had severe mental problems & chemical imbalances ended up targeting me & thinking that all the songs were written about her & that I was the father of her two children, & that the kids were products of rape, and that I was Jesus & that Jesus rapes."

"This woman drove her car at fifty miles per hour into the wall of my house & almost killed herself.

"Fear of the stalker - which he cronicled in the track "Lukin" made it hard for Vedder to leave the house & contributed to his reputation as an angry recluse."

(the article is from the June 29, 2006 issue)

Lukin is the guy from Mudhoney - he dedicated the song to him at the concert I was at in 2006 (Arnhem)... Guess he is referring to Lukin's as someplace safe where he can get away.
"I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me. Guaranteed."
