A "Dear mom" type thing.
I think she's writing to a future "patient" so that person won't feel alone like she does now.
~paraphrased E.V.0 -
as in "dear mom" I always thought. could be either though. ambiguity is good"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0

Yep, that is how I always took it."F**K you, I have laundry to do" -ed0 -
She scratches a letter...into a wall, made of stone. she's in some type of institute and she's carving a letter of a word into the wall. probably her name, or the word Fuck, I would imagine it's the word Fuck0

Yeah i always imagined the girl scratching her name into the wall in her room/cell, so furture patients would read it and realise they weren't the only ones."This town deserves a better class of criminal... and I'm gonna give it to them."0 -
The mental institutions I've worked at aren't made of stone or cement. They're more homelike these days (at least in this part of Canada)...the Big Institution (Riverview) is slowly getting torn down, but that's the place you got sent to for being "boy crazy" "promiscuous", smoking pot, truancy from school, and post-partum depression. Back in the day, nobody knew what to do with kids exhibiting that behaviour...everyone makes those places out to be much worse than it actually is...But I think Ed said somewhere that the song was about a friend of his (or a friend of a friend) who was institutionalized for smoking dope...If that happened today in BC, there'd be nobody on the streets - they'd all be locked away!!
Anyway, I have a lot of friends who are psychiatrists, so the line "she's been diagnosed by some stupid FUCK!" is bang on in some cases!be philanthropic0 -

I think so too: "She scratches a letter. Into a wall, made of stone. Maybe some day another child, won't feel as alone, as she does..."Antwerp, Belgium 8/30/06
Rock Werchter, Belgium 06/29/07
"Finally" (E.V., Antwerp 8/30/06)
"See you next year" (E.V., Antwerp 8/30/06)
=> never thought he meant it!0 -

I picture a messages. Like in for instance Shawshank redemption.« One man's glory is another man's hell.
You’re on the outside, never bound by such a spell.
Together in the darkness, alone in the light.
I took it upon me to be yours, Timmy,
I’ll lead your angels and demons at play tonight......»0 -

Diagnosed by some stupid Fuck....
Great line..
I think this line defines the song completely.
Her parents have put her in this place because they are not willing to take responsibility upon themselves for the child they have raised.
The girl was institutionalized and labeled by people who could never understand her, as insane. she could do nothing but stay trapped in that hospital. She was writing a letter to future patients to they do not feel alone and making them aware that other people have been through the same before them.0 -
I think she was writing to know that she still could. She had to go so down within herself for strength to live through the experience, that even this small act is a reflection of her strength to know that she still exists. I don't think she's thinking of the future, just moment by moment. There is no such thing as leftover pizza. There is now pizza and later pizza. - anonymous

Yeah, I didn't think it was a message to future patients. If she's a younger child I imagine it would be just like scribbiling because she's lonely and it's just about all she can do to pass the time.
"She scratches a letter into a wall, made of stone. Maybe some day another child, won't feel as alone, as she does..."
The second sentence implies that the 1st sentence is demonstrating that she is lonely. And that's what a lonely person like a prisoner would do, just scratch things into walls. I don't think she's thinking about future patients at all, she's not some prophet, she's just a young girl. And for a young girl to alleviate the loneliness of a future child with a single letter seems a little unreasonable.
Keep it simpleThat's my take.

Interesting take there. I always heard it as if her point in writing is for that future child. But yeah, she is curing her loliness by talking to the wall so to speak. I guess her age either way is kind of irrelevant. She's been in theplace for two years so she is probably at least pre-teen or older (12+).
But yeah, why go home? There she is expected to be weak. But she is strong. She'd rather not play pretend and be another clone without real parents. Probably better off without them as this point. Why go home?-Jeremy0 -
I might have this wrong, but isn't the artwork surrounding the song lyrics in the booklet a picture of a wall with the letter 'Y' written on it (as in 'Y' Go).
I stand waiting to be corrected...0 -

I always thought it was just a letter, as in one from the alphabet. Never quite looked at it in the other context before!! I shall listen to the song with new meaning now.0
