Everyone and their mother told me car insurance was going to be "So much more expensive". How I needed to be prepared for the BIG HIT I was going to take.

    Its $18  more a month.

    The horror!!
You are fortunate. My car insurance is going to double+ from 365 to 774 for six months (also Chicago area to SW Orlando).  Same coverage, same company, no accidents or other issues.

Three years ago it was about 20 more, like yours.
How on Earth did that happen?
What reasons were you given for such a drastic increase?

Basically ‘it’s Florida’. More uninsured drivers and a lot more stupid drivers / accidents.  I’ve shopped around in the past and State Farm has always been lowest (plus I multi-line with homeowners and that end of it is fairly low, relatively speaking).

We have always went with Geico for auto because they really do have great service if something happens. But the premiums are out of hand and we are shopping around. NY sucks, everything is expensive these days.

You won't find too many folks clamoring to retire in those states when weather is factored in.

Would have to be. Plus, I think they have some tax advantages as well.

I've had to go up there a couple of times over the last few years and I wouldn't even think of retiring there. There are probably some ok areas, but it seemed like the majority of it was sad and depressing former mining towns. The decline of the coal industry really took a toll on the state's economy.

Does it get any more depressing?

I'm on my employer's pension plan, which is 28 years to full retirement benefits. I've got 8 years to go, but I'll only be 50 years old and my wife has already told me I can't retire if she still has to work lol. Plus, my son will only be 10 years old then and kids are expensive! I haven't really crunched the numbers, but I would guess retirement would be a viable option around 55 or 56. The big question will be do I retire from my employer when eligible and find another job or stay on and make the pension that much better? There are pros and cons to both, but it might just boil down to who my coworkers are.
