You're not very wrong. Their early stuff had lyrics.

Pretty much instrumental in post rock. Explosions in the sky has done a bunch of soundtrack and TV stuff. Listen to "The Earth is not a cold dead place" or " All of a sudden I miss everyone" and work your way outwards
Memorial, Your Hand In Mine are outstanding on Earth, and Catastrophe and the Cure and It's Natural to be Afraid....on All of a Sudden
So instrumental metals capes. Like Metallica Call of ktulu or to live is to die.
Mogwai's Zidane album has some great soundscapes0 -

Probably R&B/Soul artists, both classic and modern. Artists like Sam Cooke, Michael Kiwanuka, Jacob Banks, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Andra Day, Bill Withers, Danielle Ponder, Gary Clarke Jr., Black Pumas, Leon Bridges, Curtis Harding, Prince, Moses Sumney, Michael Jackson, etc etc etc. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata0

Two categories for me:One: Sonic Youth. I know, S.Y. are considered rock, but their music up through Daydream Nation is unlike anything else anywhere. It was a thing of its own and is some of my favorite music. Two: Jazz. I like all form of jazz, but the more out-there stuff is my go-to. Favorites include:Albert Ayler
Marion Brown
Ornette Coleman
John Coltrane
Mile Davis (modal period)
Thelonious Monk
Pharoah Sanders
Sun Ra
World Saxophone Quartet"It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0
