Late Show with Stephen Colbert canceled...Possible Political Reasons

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will end in May 2026 because of "financial reasons". But as we all know he has been critical of the orange man. And Paramount is trying to do a merger with SkyDance who's guy in charge is orange man's fan.
The Daily Show is in danger as well.

Or maybe just because Colbert sucks and his show isn't funny.

    Maria Shriver adbook post

CBS announced tonight that they are cancelling “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” after the next season, stating that it was “purely a financial decision.” Colbert said at the show’s taping Thursday that he found out about the show’s cancellation a day earlier. In response to the studio audience booing, Colbert said, “Ya, I share your feelings.”

CBS is owned by Paramount, which is in the midst of an $8 billion merger with Skydance. That deal has been delayed for months, as President Trump filed suit with CBS owned 60 minutes. On July 2, Paramount agreed to settle that suit and pay Trump $16 million. But on his show, airing on CBS, as well as streaming on Paramount Plus, Colbert criticized the settlement between Paramount and Trump, calling it “a big fat bribe.”

While we may never know if this cancellation was politically motivated, we should be asking these questions. News organizations, journalists, and everyday people should be able to speak the truth, to report facts, and, as Stephen Colbert so often does, make sense of the news through humor. Do we want to live in a country that silences people? Is that the America you want to live in? I have appreciated and loved the work @stephenathome has done, and regardless of the reason, his work will be missed when his show goes off the air. In the meantime, I’ll be tuning in! #abovethenoise

I would love it if Colbert and Stewart (another guy MAGAs hate... at their loss), and start up their own independent network and tell the corporate pigs to take a flying fuck at the moon.

The statement was they are cancelling it, Colbert isn't ending it.  It was a financial decision.  How does a #1 show lose money?

Put this in perspective.  Lenno was approached and told they were halving the budget for the Tonight show. There wasn't enough money to go around for lenno and keep the crew.   Lenno was making like 25 mil a year at this point.  So he says if I take half my salary can I keep the crew?  The network says yes.  Lenno says DONE.

He said he already had enough money, he wanted his crew to keep working so he agreed to that.

They're taking that route because it makes it easier to sell the decision to the public as being about finances even though there currently is nothing circulating that indicates CBS even tried to work something out to keep the show going if it was truly only about the finances. It all reeks of more capitulation to appease Trump so the merger goes through.

Television, and especially late night, have definitely taken a hit the last 10 years and don't generate near as much revenue, but I can't imagine a show like Colbert's loses CBS money.

    The optics are terrible.
    It's a hopeless situation...

Paramount just paid Trump a multi-million dollar bribe last month. And they always bury the Colbert Show on the app - it's basically the only  thing I watch on there and I literally have to search for it. I cancelled Paramount+ this month - fascist enablers. Fuck them.

Totally agree.  I posted that tidbit about Lenno showing that if it indeed was about money that they can make it work.

In the words of the great Bob Dylan: "The times they are a-changin'."
I think America is sick and tired of the constant negativity and hatred by the Dems and "comedians" like Colbert, Kimmel and their ilk.
Remember the "king of late night comedy" - Johnny Carson?
That man was so funny, every single night, and yet no one ever knew where Carson stood politically.
He'd bust everybody's chops, and so the entire audience - and all of America watching at home - were entertained.
Late night comedy TV was originally developed to help America wind down at the end of a tough day, put all the politics and hatred and bullshit we are subjected to behind us, so we could get a good night's sleep, wake up the next morning and begin a fresh new day.
Maybe CBS is starting to realize this...

He is number 1 in the ratings, so he should not have a problem finding another network to hire him based off that metric.  This would be like the LA Dodgers announcing they plan to release Shohei Ohtani at the end of the year.  Teams would be lining up at his door.

Plus, he has the advantage of having a full year to negotiate.

He will carry the legacy of destroying David Letterman’s legacy, which is tough look.

we have EVERYTHING to watch now. We don’t need to be so beholden to the norms of yesteryear. If your feelings get hurt by comedians, there’s literally anything else to watch in its place in 2025.

Clearly the market has dictated what it’s wanted in programming, including late night TV. This move is seemingly going against what the market wants.

These days I find Colbert and Kimmel just as funny as Gutfeld: none of them are funny anymore, often going after people’s appearance.

Answer’s simple to me, I just don’t watch any of them. I still miss my favourite late night host, Craig Ferguson.
