3rd favourite Pearl jam song behind Long Road and Smile.
You can feel the passion in Vedders voice, the lost person was obviously very close to his and the bands heart. If I recall i think it was a lady who worked for Sony who passed away shortly before Binaural was released.
Somtimes i know, sometimes i rise,sometimes i fall,sometimes i dont,sometimes i cringe,somtimes i live sometimes i walk,sometimes i kneel,somtimes i speek of nothing at all,sometimes i reach to myself dear god
i've used hammers made out of wood
i have played games with pieces and rules
i undeciphered tricks at the bar
but now you're gone, i haven't figured out why
i've come up with riddles and jokes about war
i've figured out numbers and what they're for
i've understood feelings and i've understood words
but how could you be taken away?
and wherever you've gone
and wherever we might go
it don't seem fair...today just disappeared
your light's reflected now, reflected from afar
we were but stones, your light made us stars
with heavy breath, awakened regrets
back pages and days alone that could have been spent, together..
but we were miles apart
every inch between us becomes light years now
no time to be void or save up on life
you got to spend it all..
and wherever you've gone
and wherever we might go
it don't seem fair...you seem to like it here
your light's reflected now, reflected from afar
we were but stones, your light made us stars
and wherever you've gone
and wherever we might go
it don't seem fair...today just disappeared
your light's reflected now, reflected from afar
we were but stones, your light made us stars

I hate to bring interpretation to the song but I think this may be about Kurt Cobain. Eddie and Kurt had a tumultous relationship but on the day he found out Kurt's suicide, Ed trashed a hotel room. He was quoted as saying that it should have been him. I think that the line your light made us stars reflects the country's attention to Seattle and the movement at the time

Yeah, i never thought about it being Kurt. He could have wrote that song about anyone personal in his life though.
Situations get fucked up and turned around sooner or later...

i think i've listened to that song over a hundred times.. mostly because i put the album on repeat. it's like, the only cd i listen to when i drive. and i drive a lot. damnit. but yes, the song is superb.
Definately one of PJ's most beautiful - it'll certainly always bring a tear to my eye no matter who it was written about. I think the lyric's are so heart-felt, it could be alot of things to anyone who hears it.
hi Midget town and mr pjamas. Did eddie said it should of been him after he heard of Kurt's tragic suicide.? I remember it was courtney love who said in an interview with a German music mag that she wished it had been Eddie Veddar.
Not too sure if she was taken out of context. If she was not it was a terrible thing to say.

Light years - fantasic song - full of emotion.
Hey Johnathon, i'm not sure if it was Eddie who said that it should have been him instead of Kurt. I've a copy of n interview around the time, and in it the interviewer told Ed about a local magazine article in Seattle which said in the headline: "Why couldn't it have been Eddie Vedder". This was quoted from Courtney Love. However Eddie replied by saying, "That's nice. that's really nice. That makes me feel really good. I wonder why she didn't mention that when I phoned her last night and offered her any help or support I could give her..." Eddie said that he always thought it would have been him first, but never really said that it should've been him first. Sorry if my useless facts have not helped you.

i HOPE you'll be a star,
in somebody elses sky, but why, why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine?!
U'VE GOTTA SPEND IT ALL**
