Front of House Engineer Greg Nelson shares his live mixing strategy for tour: What I'm trying to do is just get their performance out to the crowd - what they're doing there live on stage - I'm trying to get that represented to the audience and they may not be doing exactly what the record is. Those are different amps recorded on the record, it's a different drum kit. It's a different everything so it's not necessarily going to sound like the record. Bands that use the same gear live and in the studio - that's a whole other thing too, but I'm trying to create a sort of in-the-moment raw experience every night for people.
I think dynamics are incredibly important in a live show.. There should be moments where the crowd has to shut up to hear the show um and then there should be moments where you're just peeling their face off… and that sort of ride is what I think makes live shows great. (More).
