Present Tense (Redux)

Talk about a nice little surprise!

I love it, as I do the original. I'm not gonna get into "which version is better?" Because I think there's room enough to enjoy both for what they are.

There's a timeless urgency to the message in Present Tense, and I think the world could really use it right now.

So guys, if you're listening, and you want to put it out as a radio single, go for it🤙

P.S. do you think this portends something akin to a No Code Redux?

Or maybe a re-recording of songs selected by the band ala John Prine's excellent 'Souvenirs' record?? (RIP, John - we miss you).

What do y'all think?🤔

Have listened to it multiple times today. So good.

Hearing a classic from 1996 re-recorded with the current version of EV’s voice is awesome.

Go to the 2:52 timestamp. With the “ohhhhhh!” that comes after “redigesting past regrets” he pauses/delays for a second as if he isn’t sure he can still pull it off. Then he pulls it off. Love it

Also the delay at 1:05 to 1:11 messed with me. But you can really hear the difference in his voice when it kicks back in

I'm very attached to the affect of the OG. Very.
However, I do like the redux though it's never going to amount to that level for me.

I rarely listen to Pearl Jam’s studio albums, except for No Code (and Yield, and Gigaton).
The original Present Tense will always be my favourite version, but I really like the redux as well.

Listening to the original has always felt like a spiritual experience - the gradual, almost hypnotic build-up and the cathartic climax truly make it the highlight of No Code.

This new version feels almost as introspective. It’s something of a throwback, yet clearly a fresh take on the themes as they’re perceived today. That’s why it works so well, I feel.

I hope it stops there, though. I wouldn’t want to hear Matt Cameron's studio take on Who You Are or In My Tree. These songs are already perfect imo.
